Computer Software Development
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Internet
programmer, systems analyst
This degree prepares you to enter the growing and well-paid
field of computer programming. You’ll learn various phases of
software development, including how to design, write, test and
document computer programs with a variety of tools, using indemand languages such as Java, C# and SQL.
In addition to learning to program for desktop computers and
other devices, you’ll also explore Internet programming with
technologies such as ASP, JSP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Computer Science Transfer
2-year Liberal Arts (AS) degree | Potential Careers:
Software engineering, computer programming
Explore the theory and foundations of computer technology.
Not only will you get your core education to transfer to a
four-year school, you will learn basic programming and the
tools used in the development of cutting edge computing
solutions. At Kirkwood, you will find a wide variety of classes,
world-class labs and instructors, and personalized assistance to
put you on the right track.
Computer Support Specialist
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Computer support,
technical support
Provide technical assistance to users as well as maintain,
upgrade, and repair computer systems and networks. Students
interested in this field should have an interest in working with
people. Specialists constantly interact with customers and
fellow employees as they answer questions and give valuable
advice. They should also enjoy learning about new technology
and be willing to work on both hardware and software systems.
Good writing and communications skills are also required.
This degree focuses on a variety of IT skills that include
hardware, software, networking and programming, as well as
problem-solving and analytical skills.
Graphic Communication Technology
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Graphic designer,
advertising, print and publishing
Learn design, layout, image manipulation and illustration, as
well as final graphics used in print, web and motion graphics,
plus receive extensive experience working on Mac computers
using industry standard software from Adobe.
Credits from this program transfer to local four-year schools.

Network and System Administration
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Network technician,
network administrator
Network and system administrators work in a fast-paced and
challenging area of ethnology that designs, builds, integrates,
maintains and secures local area networks. They design
and support server systems and related software, as well as
provide end-user support for all LAN-based applications.
After completing a common course of study for the first three
semesters, network and system administration majors will
choose from three specialty areas to match individual interests
and employment availability.
Network Administration emplasis: Specialize in LAN and
WAN infrastructure including wireless, desktop systems and
protocol suites.
System Administration emphasis: Specialize in server
hardware and software, directory services, scripting and storage
management.
Security and Virtualization emphasis: Specialize in system
firewalls, secure group policy, access control lists, information
and management with disaster recover, virtual network design
and implementation, and virtual switching and routing.
Telecommunications Technology
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Fiber optics
installer, network management technician
Learn to install, provision, test and troubleshoot circuits ranging
from simple phone lines to high speed optical fiber circuits.
You will also study access technologies used in cell phones,
high speed Internet and wireless communication. One of the
highlights of this program is the live server telecommunications
lab that provides hands-on training for students. Graduates of
this program can go on to complete a four-year degree at UNI.
Web Technologies
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Web application
developer, website content manager
Pursue a high tech associate’s degree that you can tailor to your
specific interests. Or, choose the short-term certificate option if
you’re not in the market for a full two-year degree. No matter
which path you choose, you will learn a strong foundation in
HTML, CSS, Web media, site design and development, and
introductory computer programming.
Web Development emphasis: Perfect for those who enjoy the
programming side of website development. Learn Java, Visual
Basic.NET and client side scripting.
Web Graphic Design emphasis: Focus on digital layout
and learning professional graphic tools, including Adobe
Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash.
Web Design & Development certificate: In just two semesters,
add basic Web skills and many of the core courses from the
Web Technologies degree to your skill portfolio. This does not
include emphasis areas or advanced courses.
Certificates
Pair your two-year degree with a tailored certification, or take
your current skills to a new level. Earn specialized certificates
in several information technology related fields, or create a
