Show off your artistic flair! Whether it’s acting, writing,
painting, music or sculpting, the spirit of fine and
performing arts is very much alive at Kirkwood.
The Cedar Valley Divide, and gain practical experience
reading and editing literary manuscripts, as well as in-depth
information about publishing and printing processes.
Kirkwood students perform in five musical concerts each
semester, one or two of which feature nationally known
guest artists. Plus, Kirkwood stages three large-scale theatre
productions every year. Students help design, produce and
act in these performances.
Maybe it’s video and TV news that spark your interest.
Join Kirkwood Student Productions (KSP) and create live
newscasts or help shoot video at events on campus for the
Kirkwood Channel. Got a killer voice? Kirkwood is home
to KCCK, Iowa’s only jazz radio station.

If you plan to get started at Kirkwood then
transfer to a four-year school, you have options.
Depending on where you want to transfer and what you want
to study, you can earn an Associate of Arts or an Associate
of Sciences degree in Liberal Arts, an Associate of Applied
Science degree or take only the classes you need to transfer.
Students who earn Associate of Applied Science degrees
usually go straight into the workforce; however, some of these
programs have transfer agreements with four-year institutions.
Kirkwood’s art, music, theatre, English and communications
disciplines provide a framework for you to explore. Deepen
your knowledge in one select area, or take courses from more
than one area and discover a new field of study!
Liberal Arts – Art
When you’re inspired to create, the possibilities are limitless!
Transfer to a four-year school or art institute and someday have
an exciting and creative career as a professional artist, curator,
gallery owner, art educator, illustrator or graphic designer.
•Choose from art history, painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, printmaking, sculpture or glass blowing.
•Have your art displayed in Kirkwood’s art gallery.

Liberal Arts – Music
Be the next Grammy award winner! Transfer to a four-year
institution or enroll at a music conservatory and someday have
an exciting career as a composer, educator or performer.
•Choose from vocal music, instrumental music, music history or music theory.
•Love to sing? Perform in Jazz Transit, RSVP or Concert
Chorale, Kirkwood’s auditioned vocal ensembles, which
are all internationally acclaimed and nationally recognized
for high standards of performance.
•Play an instrument? Join Kirkwood’s Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos or the Concert Band. Highly-acclaimed professional musicians come to Kirkwood each year to play with these groups.

director, producer, stage manager or designer.
•Choose from acting or technical theatre.

•Participate in the Kennedy Center’s American College
Theatre Festival and compete for the national Irene Ryan
Acting Scholarship.

Graphic Communication Technology
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Graphic designer,
advertising agent
Develop your practical knowledge and get hands-on experience
with current standards in graphic communication. Learn
design, layout, image manipulation and illustration principles
to apply to final graphics used in 2D design, print, Web and
motion graphics, plus receive extensive experience working on
Apple computers using industry-standard software from Adobe.
Credits from this program transfer to Ashford University
(Graphic Design). See your advisor for additional transfer
options.
Web Technologies
2-year AAS degree | Potential Careers: Web designer,
digital developer
Begin with a set of basic courses covering HTML and CSS,
Web media, and introductory computer and programming
skills. Then, learn various aspects of Web design and
development through courses emphasizing the workflow
associated with the planning process, site design and the use of
standard technologies, such as content management systems,
to provide client solutions. See the business side of Web
development through courses in marketing and e-commerce,
learning about current topics such as Web analytics and
search engine optimization along with payments, catalogs and
shopping carts. You will also use scripting, PHP and databases.
Certificates
Pair your two-year degree with a tailored certification, or
take your current skills to a new level. Earn specialized
certificates in several fields, or create a completely unique
