Distance Learning Online Classes
Learn outside the traditional classroom! Check out the Student Resources page at www.kirkwood.edu/distancelearning to
determine if Online courses are right for you.
Registration policy: First-time students in Online classes must submit COMPASS or ACT scores. Students with earned Kirkwood
online credit are exempt from this restriction. Find further details about this policy under the Registration Rule link at
www.kirkwood.edu/distancelearning. Placement testing can be completed at any Kirkwood campus or center location. Students
outside of the Kirkwood area can test at any accredited testing center and have scores sent to Kirkwood prior to online registration.
Contact the Test Center at 319-398-5456 for more information and to find a location closest to you.
Online Registration Restriction: Students with a GPA of less than 1.8 for all online classes within the previous three years will
have a registration restriction placed on their record. The restriction prevents registration in online classes until the average for
online courses reaches 1.8 or better, or a three year period has passed. The average for online courses can be improved by
retaking failed or low-scored courses in a face-to-face format. Retaking and passing courses removes previous grades from the
transcript. Note: This registration restriction does not prevent students from enrolling in face-to-face or hybrid format classes, only
online classes.
Online courses have deadlines: There is always a start and end date. Instructors decide on any other deadlines. You must begin
your course promptly and make sure you understand and can meet your instructor’s requirements. If you receive financial aid, be
sure to know your instructor’s attendance requirement.
Financial aid attendance: go to www.kirkwood.edu/online and click “Are you Receiving Financial Aid?” Financial aid is available
for books before classes begin. After classes begin, your attendance must be verified in order to use financial aid for textbooks.
Buying books/materials: View information and purchase textbooks online at www.kirkwood.edu/bookstore. You must purchase
the materials specified for your section. Some online courses may require an access code found in the textbook, and course work
cannot be started without it.
Student e-mail: your course information will be e-mailed. It is important to provide the college with a current e-mail address, and
to learn how to access your Kirkwood student e-mail account. Visit www.kirkwood.edu/email for information about how to activate
your student account.
Internet/online courses:* Online classes are accessed at www.kirkwood.edu/talon. Find how to log in and other information at
www.kirkwood.edu/online. You do not have to be online at any specific time, but there will be due dates for the assignments and
exams. A textbook is usually required and many courses require monitored exams.
* Some Online courses require access to a Kirkwood center, usually because of media, software or class meeting requirements.
Be sure to check the individual course comments for this information.
Testing: Many courses require monitored exams. Look for testing procedures at www.kirkwood.edu/online and click on Taking
Online Exams. Submit the Exam Request Form ONLY if you are unable to test at a Kirkwood location.
Registration: Registration dates and information can be found at www.kirkwood.edu/onestop under Registration Information. You
can register at eaglenet.kirkwood.edu or call 319-398-7600 or 877-386-9101. NOTE: online courses fill up just like traditional
courses. Register as soon as possible.
Waitlists: If classes are full, many online sections will offer the option to add your name to a waitlist. Use Manage My Waitlist on
EagleNet to check your daily status. Being on a waitlist does not guarantee a seat in a class. Look for more information about
waitlisting at www.kirkwood.edu/distancelearning.
Withdrawing from classes: Select Register and Drop Sections on EagleNet, or call 319-398-7600 or 877-386-9101. Withdrawal
dates can be found at www.kirkwood.edu/onestop under Important Dates.
Tutoring: Free tutoring is available for online students. Call 319-398-5425 for more information.
