Sylvia Chan-Olmsted will present the two papers she wrote with doctoral student G. Oba at the seventh World Media Economics Conference next month in Beijing: “Assessing the international video marketplace: A longitudinal examination of the environmental factors affecting the export of US video media goods” and “Video strategy of transnational media corporations: A resource-based view examination of global alliances and patterns.” The International Journal on Media Management recently accepted their “Content development for the third screen: The business and strategy of mobile content and applications in the United States.” The Journal of Media Economics recently published her “Vertical integration in the US syndication market.” The Journalism and Mass Communication Educator recently accepted Johanna Cleary’s “From the Classroom to the Newsroom: Professional Development in Broadcast Journalism.” Justin Brown, doctoral students Sangwon Lee and Jiyoung Cha, and master’s student Drew Bagley made presentations to the National Cable Telecommunications Association’s Academic Seminar in April: • Brown presented “Perspectives on Communications Services & Lifeline: Results of a Telephone Survey of Florida Households.” • Lee presented “The Effects of Competition and Regulation on Broadband Deployment in the United States.” • Cha presented “Competitive Strategy in the New VoIP Market: The Adoption and Commercialization of VoIP Services by MSOs, Telcos, and Independent Providers.” • Bagley presented “The Broadcast Flag: A White Flag for Fair Use?” Newspaper Research Journal accepted Cory Armstrong’s “Typecasting women: The Role of Genre in the Use of Female Newspaper Sources” for its summer issue. HIGH HONORS SPEAK EASY Alum wins Pulitzer Marvel to address SPJ chapter David Finkel, JM 1977, staff writer for The Washington Post, recently received the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting – “for his ambitious, clear-eyed case study of the United States government’s attempt to bring democracy to Yemen,” according to the award’s Web site. John Marvel speaks Thursday at 7 p.m. at the North Central Florida Society of Professional Journalists meeting at Napalatano’s. The event is open to the public. The Center for Latin American Studies recently invited Belio Martinez to become an affiliate faculty member. He will represent UF, the College and the Department of Public Relations at a Workshop for Journalists Martinez and Editors from around the world in Miami May 5-6. SHARED GOVERNANCE Ferguson represents College on the UF Faculty Senate The College faculty elected Mary Ann Ferguson to a threeyear term on the UF Faculty Senate. The Senate, in turn, nominated Ferguson to the Academic Personnel Ferguson Board (APB) and the UF Constitution Committee. “I believe this is the first time in the 25 years that I’ve been here that our College has had an opportunity to be represented on the APB,” she said, “and I think that’s a good omen.” 4 the open line GATORS ON FILM Doc Institute holds annual showing The Documentary Institute will hold its seventh annual Student Documentary Screening May 5 at 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Reitz Union. The institute will show the short documentaries in the auditorium and hold a reception afterwards.
