(Photo by Olivia Jeffries) GATORS ON May 3, 2010 FILM Kaplan’s short documentary a winner The Broadcast Educators Association (BEA) awarded John Kaplan’s “Pulitzer Pride” Best of Competition earlier this month at the Festival of Media Arts in Las Vegas. A documentary short, “Pulitzer Pride” is part of Kaplan’s autobiographical cancer education project. This month, the Athens International Film + Video Festival is showing “Pulitzer Pride.” Kaplan recently lectured and screened “Pulitzer Pride” and the full-length version of the project, “Not As I Pictured,” at Michigan State University. As a guest lecturer, he also addressed several classes of MSU’s School of Journalism, Asian Studies Center, and African Studies Center. Debbie Treise received the 2009-10 Doctoral Dissertation and Mentoring Award. Bill Chamberlin won it in 2002-03. Juan-Carlos Molleda won the Treise 2010 University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship award. He is the College’s 12th faculty member to receive the honor. Recipients receive a $5,000 salary Molleda supplement for three years and a one-time $3,000 allocation. NEW APPOINTMENT Harding fills in for Knowles Mike Harding, TEL 1977, will serve as senior associate development officer during Laforis Knowles’ (PR 2002) temporary leave. PAPER TRAIL IT’S AN HONOR HEARST UPDATE Coffey publishes paper, chapter College celebrates Counts’ retirement College places fifth in photojournalism The College honored Frank Counts, who is retiring, for his 38 years of “outstanding service and dedication to the college and stations,” said Dean Counts John Wright. The College held a luncheon on Tuesday in Weimer Hall 3032. The College has placed fifth in the 2009-2010 Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition. In the final round of the photojournalism contests, Jeremiah Stanley placed ninth in the Picture Story/Series-Multimedia Competition and Jasmine Luoma placed 15th. The Communication Law & Policy published Amy Jo Coffey and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Assistant Prof. Amy Sanders’ “Defining a product market for Spanish-language broadcast media: Lessons from United States v. Univision Communications, Inc. and Hispanic Broadcasting.” Routledge published Coffey’s chapter, “Growth and Trends in Spanish Language Television in the United States,” in Alan Albarran’s book The Handbook of Spanish Language Media. 3 the open line May 3, 2010 STUDENT SUCCESS A dozen seniors win Dean’s Cup Awards During the recent 2010 spring awards banquet, 12 graduating seniors received Dean’s Cup Awards: Advertising major Christina Burnham, journalism major Hilary Lehman, journalism major Kim Wilmath and public relations major Kathryn Watson received the Dean’s Cup for Professional Promise. Journalism major Deborah Swerdlow, journalism major Katherine Villacis, public relations major Kaitlyn Weller, and Burnham journalism major Zahara Zahav received the Dean’s Cup for Scholarship. Telecommunication major Andrea Babineau, journalism major April Dudash and public relations major Nawal Fakhoury received the Dean’s Cup for Service Awards. Telecommunication major Miles Doran Lehman won the Ruth and Rae O. Weimer Award for overall excellence. Doctoral students win UF teaching awards Doctoral students Maria De Moya and Kevin Bowers received 2009-10 UF Graduate Student Teaching Awards. Their advisers are Juan-Carlos Molleda, Belio Villacis Martinez and Renee Martin-Kratzer, respectively. The award for Outstanding Master’s Students went to Moon Hee Cho and Jon Bougher. The Outstanding Student Research Award went to Matt Ragas. Bateman teams wins honorable mention This year’s Bateman team, made up of public relations students Chris Brennan, Ngozi Chuku, Jennifer Gezzar, Justin Root and Karuna Tsang, received an Honorable Mention in the 2010 Bateman Case Study Competition. The campaign focused on the 2010 Census. It was one of 16 honorable mentions from among 68 submissions. Tsang Alpha Productions wins Image Awards Alpha PRoductions received two Image Awards from the North Central Florida Public Relations Association. Watson Public relations students Erika Zayas, Stephanie Holder, Katie Armalavage, Cassandra Hudson, Matthew Hersch and Nicole Flores received an Image Award in the Student Projects Category for the “When Did You Become A Gator?” campaign. Erika Zayas, Joanna Brighton, Sabine Jean Francois, Rachel Kopec, Jacky Ramos and Kathryn Watson, received the other award category for the “UF Solar Decathlon Project RE: FOCUS” campaign. FREEDOM OF INFORMATION Detroit Free Press wins Brechner FOI award The Brechner Center for Freedom of Information named the Detroit Free Press winner of the 2009 Joseph L. Brechner Freedom of Information Award for its coverage of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s text message scandal. In Small Market Television: Telecommunication student Kristen Keely received Best Breaking Sports for “SEC Championship Fraud.” Telecommunication senior Miles Doran and Patrick Fleming, TEL 2009, received second place in Best Hard News Feature for “Gitmo Guard Duty.” Cristina Xuarez, TEL 2009, received Best Series Reporting for “Flight 401 Tribute.” Doran received the Individual Achievement award in Small Market Television for WUFT. He beat other professionals last year in the same category.
