Spotted Tail, 1876 In 1874, General Custer led an expedition to the Black Hills which was part of the Great Sioux Reservation given to them through the Fort Laramie Treaty. Custer and his men were in search of gold. Once gold was found, people from the United States battled against the Sioux until the government took over the land in 1877. They combined communities and shared the land. B They had many conflicts over the right to control land. C They created new boundaries and divided the land equally.
