Transfer Applicant Information
UW – Stout would like students to have completed 12 college level credits prior to transferring. Students are considered a
transfer student if they have taken at least one college level course starting the fall semester after graduating high school.
General Education Course List
The University of Wisconsin – Stout has a minimum 40 credit General Education core requirements that is required in all of its
undergraduate programs (some majors may require more than 40 general education credits). Some of the majors do
require specific general education courses. Program plan sheets are available for each major which allows students to
check the specific general education requirements for that major.
By completing an Associate of Arts degree, all of the general education requirements at UW – Stout will be fulfilled with the
exception of those specifically required for a major. Please refer to the program plan that is specific to the major at UWStout to obtain this information. All program plan sheets on UW – Stout’s website can be accessed at “undergrad degree
programs” or at http://www.uwstout.edu/programs/ugrad.cfm . In addition, the 9 credit communication skills block must be
met (ENGL 101, ENGL 102 and SPCOM 100); the appropriate level math course must be completed and a lab science
course must be complete.
Transfer students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 (2.75 for education majors) to be eligible for
admission to UW – Stout. If the cumulative grade point average is above 2.2 but lower than 2.5, applicants will be put on a
waiting list and offered admission at a later date if space permits. Applicants for the following majors have additional
requirements that must be met: Applied Science; Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Plastics
Engineering; Dietetics; Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management; Game Design and Development; Supply Chain
Management; Teacher education degree programs.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS- Racial and Ethnic Studies (Goal 7) & Global Perspective (Goal 8) – Automatically complete
with the completion of an Associate of Arts Degree
Part of a student’s degree requirements include that as part of their coursework to also take courses that meet Racial &
Ethnic Studies as well as Global Perspective. Six credits in each area is required. Students NOT transferring having
completed the associate of arts degree will need to meet these requirements as part of their other major requirements. It is
in the student’s best interest to try to do this as part of general education as many of our majors don’t have these type of
courses in the major area. In addition, for Racial & Ethnic Studies (Diversity – Goal 7), we require two levels, RES-A and RES-B.
ALL students MUST have one 3 credit RES-A course. More information can be found on-line at
http://www.uwstout.edu/curr/committees/gec/index.cfm choosing the GE/RES/GLP Course List [PDF] under Fall 2013.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS (Goal 1) - 8 SEMESTER CREDITS (3 COURSES)
Most Minnesota Community/Technical Colleges offer equivalents for all three of our courses in this area. Some only offer an
equivalent to ENGL 101 and SPCOM 100. If you’re unsure, contact the Transfer Coordinator to see if there is an equivalent to
ENGL 102. Most have titles such as College/English Composition I and II.
UW-Stout’s requirements are:
ENGL 101 Composition 1
ENGL 102 – Composition 2
SPCOM 100 Fundamentals of Speech (Public Speaking)
*ANALYTICAL REASONING (Goal 4) & NATURAL SCIENCE (Goal 3) - 10 SEMESTER CREDITS (at least one mathematics or
statistics course and a natural science course with a lab are required)

to program requirements for major). All ten credits do not have to be met if the student completed an Associate of Arts
degree. As always, check the program requirements. Some majors do require statistics to round out this category.

Math for Liberal Arts = MATH 118 Concepts of Math
College Algebra = MATH 120 College Math I
Trigonometry or Precalculus (if offered for 3+ credits) = MATH 121 College Math II
An exception to this is if a student took College Algebra and Trigonometry (2 credit course) the two will be
combined to equal our MATH 121.
Finite Math = MATH 123 Finite Math
Calculus = MATH 153 Calculus I
Choose any 4 credit course that includes a lab from Goal 3 Natural Sciences
