Capital Project Updates:
Chillers waiting to be installed
inside the power plant.
Winter 200
2007
What’s all that
at work on Third Street
outside the power plant? It’s part of the
chilled water loop system which will
provide air conditioning to all campus
buildings, replacing a series of less
efficient systems.
Work for this particular phase of the
project began on January 15, by removing
the windowed walls of the power plant
and installing three chillers. Those were the
chillers you saw wrapped in blue and white
plastic on Third Street’s sidewalk.
Cranes are scheduled to set structural steel
on the power plant’s roof before placing three
large cooling towers on top of the building.

Donna Otto:
December’s Classified Employee of the Month
Last month, Chancellor Sorensen presented
Donna Otto with the Classified Employee of
the Month award.
Donna’s coworkers in the Human Resources
office noted, “she always takes the extra step
to assist people in any way that she can, often
going far beyond what is required to accomplish
the job.”
“When Donna is gone, everyone
who comes in the office asks, ‘Where’s
Donna?’—looking for her smiling face. She
is willing to help when and where needed.
No job is ever too small!”
Donna has been at UW-Stout for
27 years. For nearly seven of those
years she has been the first point of
contact for the Human Resources office.
How do YOU reduce energy consumption? E-mail the editor at clarkra@uwstout.edu
Keep Stout #1
Everyone’s doing it
Stout is proud to have the lowest energy usage
rates in the UW system for over a decade.
Executive Order 145 requires UW campuses
to reduce energy usage 10% by fiscal year 2008
and 20% by fiscal year 2010.
Meeting this new requirement means
everyone on campus must reduce their personal
energy consumption as much as possible. Help
keep UW-Stout number one!
Around campus you can find all kinds of
examples of ways Stout employees are
conserving energy. The Procurement &
Materials Management Department, in the
General Services building, began keeping its
bay doors closed when not in use. This helps
retain heat in the winter and cool air in the
summer, and reduces the amount of energy
spent by the HVAC system.
Great News!
▀ Wendy Knutson, Institutional Planner in the Budget, Planning & Analysis office, received positive
reviews on her recent presentation at the Association for Institutional Research Upper Midwest
conference. Audience comments included, “Good speaker, interesting presentation,” and “...a good
study of a unique assessment of student engagement.” Wendy was also selected to present at the
national Association of Institutional Research conference this summer.
▀ Intergroup Dialogue, offered through the Ally Center in the MSC, was highlighted in The Bulletin of
the Association of College Unions International. The program was given special mention in the article
“Best Practices for College Unions and Student Activities: Multicultural and Diversity Programing.”
Intergroup Dialogue is under the direction of Mary McManus, Assistant Director of University
Centers. It is designed “to create an open and engaging environment where information and feelings
about differences can be expressed, understood and responded to.”
▀ The Budget, Planning & Analysis office sponsored a one-day facilitation training workshop. The
workshop was lead by Jean Morrison, president of Morrison & Associates, Inc., and co-founder
of RESOLVE, a consulting firm providing conflict management and other professional services.
The Administrative & Student Life Services division congratulates the following employees for
completing the workshop:

of Administration. The award will fund the development of a post-offer essential job functions
screening program, designed to reduce work place injuries on campus. Ideally, the program will serve
as an example for other campuses and state agencies.

Did You Miss Out?
Last September, communications consultant, Pat
Seidel, presented her E-mail Madness workshop.
Pat provided participants with tips for reducing
and managing the flow of E-mail.
Participants said the workshop “made me think
about how I use E-mail,” and “many of [Pat’s]
concepts should be institutionalized at Stout.”
In March, Business & Financial Services will
move to the Memorial Student Center and Career
Services will move to the fourth floor of the Library
Learning Center. All phone numbers will remain
the same.
Jarvis Hall Science Wing
SDS Architects (one of the firms on the Red Cedar
Hall project) and BWBR Architects were selected
as the architects/engineers for the Jarvis Hall
Science Wing Renovation project.
On January 29, the architects, Department of
State Facilities, UW System and Stout’s Jarvis
Hall Building Committee will meet on campus to
kick off the project.
Later in September, Patty Loew, author and
public television producer spoke to our division
about her new documentary, “Native American
Veterans.”
Participants got a sneak peak at the movie due
to air on Wisconsin Public Television in February.
Attendees called her presentation fascinating and
requested “more speakers just like her.”
