Publisher: Diane Moen Vice Chancellor moend@uwstout.edu (715) 232-1683 Angelina likes horses, hunting, the Packers, and asbestos inspections. No, seriously. You will not find a more enthusiastic asbestos inspector and management planner in Wisconsin. That’s a good thing, because Angelina’s job is critical to providing a safe work environment here at Stout. Angelina maintains records on each room on campus, from the caulk used to seal the windows to the drywall materials and the paint. Before any work order (Right) Angelina takes asbestos samples from the exterior of the LST House. (Bottom) Angelina on the trails with her horse, Londa. If the records aren’t complete, Angelina takes samples and sends them to a Minnesota lab for testing. Angelina gives high praise to Stout’s custodial, maintenance and crafts workers. She is impressed by their ability to spot degradation of asbestos containing materials and their diligence in informing her when there is a problem. Before coming to Stout as our half-time asbestos coordinator last fall, Angelina ran a successful environmental health and safety consulting firm, working with companies from around the world. Such a topic might intimidate some, but Angelina’s enthusiasm is fun to be around. Her office is decorated with a Packer’s Flag and pictures of her horses. She also has good news to share. She and her husband, Alan, are expecting their first child, sometime around Labor Day! Chat with the Chancellor Spring 2007 Sixty Administrative & Student Life Services employees attended the second annual “Chat with the Chancellor.” Attendees communicated directly with Chancellor Sorensen on issues facing the university and our division. The Chancellor was available for two sessions to accommodate all ASLS units. Topics of interests included polytechnic designation and branding, Stout’s strong technology infrastructure, budget expectations, the Harvey Hall Theatre Project and implementation of block scheduling. Upcoming celebrations of the new designation and the end of the first five-year strategic planning cycle (Focus 2010) were also discussed. Administration Building Move The temporary relocation of Administration Building occupants is complete. Work on the HVAC renovation project is underway. The staff of Administrative & Student Life Services has shown a great deal of tolerance and flexibility―both those who settled into temporary workspaces and those who worked extra hours to keep the move on schedule. Improvising with plywood cubicles, Business & Financial Services was proactive about employee moral. In March, the office held a cubicle decorating contest. Each participating Joel Heuschele, winner of the BFS decorating workspace was judged on the decorator’s creativity, originality contest, poses behind his cubicle porthole. and effort. Joel Heuschele’s yellow submarine motif, complete with a cubicle wall porthole, won first place. Carla Greiber’s yard sale theme won the “Tacky and Terrific” category, and the cashier’s office pirate cove won the “Nice Try” award. Stout Takes on “Urban Run Off” Urban run off is pollution swept into creeks, streams and lakes with rain water. This includes chemicals, trash and sediment that can degrade the physical and biological characteristics of lakes and streams. UW-Stout’s Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP) is designed to reduce urban runoff from campus parking lots, roofs and streets as well as eliminate illegal dumping of pollutants directly into drains. Our SWMP is in its final stage, pending approval from the Department of Natural Resources. The plan describes our existing storm water management facilities and practices, and proposes additional efforts to meet the recently revised state requirements. Currently, UW-Stout students partner with the City of Menomonie to design and install rain gardens, stencil/ mark storm drains to discourage dumping, participate in the adopt a stream program, and monitor stream water quality. To reduce sediment runoff Stout sweeps campus parking lots semi-annually, uses minimal amounts of salt and sand, and recycles/ mulches leaves and grass clippings. Stout’s SWMP will provide public education and outreach, detection of illegal dumping, construction site pollution control, post construction site storm water management, and pollution prevention programs.
