The department supports 18 varsity Continued on page 2 Employees of the Month Linda O’Connell—April Linda O’Connell, Business & Financial Services, was named the Classified Employee of the Month for April, 2007. Individuals nominating O’Connell stated: “Linda O’Connell has audited and processed travel registration and expense forms with an outstanding service attitude for many years. She is a model of professionalism, efficiency, patience and service attitude…. She is always helpful, positive, kind and patient.” Brian Scholfield—May Brian Scholfield, Academic Custodial, was named the Classified Employee of the Month for May, 2007. Individuals nominating Scholfield stated: “We know that when Brian is around things get done and projects are completed with a level of quality unmatched by many others. Brian is an exceptional asset to our building…. He drops everything he’s doing to help and assist others no matter what.” Rosalie Werner-—June Rosalie Werner, University Dining Services, was named the Classified Employee of the Month for June, 2007. Individuals nominating Werner stated: “Rosalie always makes the customer feel welcome and will go out of her way to please them, thinking ahead of what they might ask for…. Rosalie is a cornerstone of stability for the student center dining operations, and is one of the hardest working and most reliable employees on the campus.” Athletics, Continued from page 1 Page 2 sports and is also involved with cheerleaders, club teams, dance lines and other student groups. Most of Athletics’ 1.8 million dollar budget comes from segregated student fees and general program revenue. In addition, coaches and their teams do a great deal of fund raising, often exceeding $500,000. That’s about half of all the teams’ operating budgets. Many coaches also fill teaching and other part-time positions to equal 100% employment. That means some staff are now employees of both the ASLS and Academic & Student Affairs divisions. “I’ll be working closely with the Department of Physical Education to coordinate staff and budget between the two divisions,” Harlan said. We were enjoying Harlan’s enthusiasm and commenting on the neatness of his stacks of paper, when the Vice Chancellor broke in. “What everyone really wants to know is if you’ll give us any predictions for the Blue Devils this year,” she smiled. “Oh, no, no. I’m not a coach.” Harlan wouldn’t give in to the loyal Blue Devil fans in the room, but he did say that our Men’s Hockey team was ranked in the top 10 in the nation much of last year, and most of that team is returning this fall. Women’s Basketball has three straight championships and many of those athletes will also return. Men’s Golf, a new program, has a roster full of talent, and both Women’s Cross Country and Gymnastics will have stellar athletes as well. Go Blue Devils! New Appointments Phil Lyons—Assistant Vice Chancellor for SLS Phil Lyons will begin as Assistant Vice Chancellor for SLS on August 20, 2007. He comes to us from Saint Louis University where he served as the Associate Vice President. Phil is working on a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Saint Louis University. He has a master’s in Educational Administration from Southern Illinois University and a master’s in International Relations-Strategic Studies from University of Aberdeen-King’s College in Scotland. In July, Lucy Nicolai became the permanent Director of University Centers. Lucy has been with University Centers for 25 years, the last two of those years as interim director. Nicolai was chosen Lucy Nicolai to represent UW-Stout on the UW System President’s Commission on University Safety and has served as Resident Director at Dalkeith House for the Wisconsin in Scotland study abroad program. She earned both a bachelor’s in Home Economics Education and a master’s in Education from UW-Stout. Also in July, Meridith Wentz accepted permanent appointment as Director of Budget, Planning & Analysis after serving two years as the interim. She has Meridith Wentz worked in Budget, Planning & Analysis since 2001. Meridith earned a master’s in Applied Psychology at UW-Stout and a PhD in Educational Policy and Administration from the University of Minnesota. She has a number of national and international publications and presentations to her credit. Dave Hackel Dave Hackel became Student Life Services’ permanent IT guy this past April. He was a studentemployee in SLS’s tech services since 2002 and graduated with a bachelor’s in Packaging from UW-Stout in May, 2007. He and his wife, Amy, were married on July 28, 2007. Dave is a saltwater aquarist, loves spending time with friends and family and enjoys working on computers, even in his time off. 2006-2007 Collaborative Group Reception The Wrap Up Report Last June, 16 groups and approximately 140 individuals were honored at the annual Collaborative Group Reception. The reception recognizes groups, committees and teams that have collaborated within, across and beyond the Administrative & Student Life Services division. The Vice Chancellor provided a continental breakfast and musical entertainment before highlighting the accomplishments of each group. The Good News Wendy Knutson, Associate Institutional Planner, graduated with her master’s in Applied Psychology from UW-Stout in May, 2007. Lisa Walter was selected to represent Wisconsin and the U.S. as part of the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics World Summer Games in China. Lisa also received a grant to attend the FBI National Academy Associates 2007 Training Conference during July in Phoenix, Arizona. The conference is titled “Protecting and Serving America.” Stout Adventures sold out its winter break New Zealand trip in three weeks! Seven students from UW-Stout and two from other campuses are bound for 22 days of kayaking, biking and hiking in the mythical land of fire and ice. In May, six ASLS employees completed the Collegiate Management Institute (CMI) held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The Alumni Experience: Rick Olson, Business & Financial Services, and Michelle Young, Budget, Planning & Analysis. University Dining Services published an article, “Dining Bucks Reward Program,” in the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) newsletter. The article discussed how Stout’s dining services increased sales, customer counts and traffic while showing customer appreciation in a fun and unique way. University Dining Services and Custodial Services deserve a big pat on the back for their performance at the “Drums Along the Red Cedar” event on June 17, 2007. Drum Corps World magazine gave the event perfect scores for concessions and rest rooms and ranked the Don and Nona Williams Stadium number one in comfort, convenience and accessibility.
