Virtual Weatherization Education Steve Klocke Abstract: This building science focused session presents a breakthrough training method for weatherization and building science professionals. The end results: the “House as a System Learning Exercise,” a three dimensional online game that trainees can use to become familiar with the consequences, whether intentional or unintentional, of typical weatherization actions. Experts in building science, media development and instructional design worked with the National Institute of Building Sciences to design lessons for an online training platform for the US Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program. The game provides an opportunity for trainees to learn about building science and health & safety issues from the convenience of their home computers. In addition to learning about the development process, attendees will view the end result and learn how they can access this nextgeneration training tool.
