Affordable Housing & Sustainability: Making Green Design Available to All

Abstract:
Sustainability is not just a luxury, but it is a necessity and a right for everyone. Sustainable design for
multiple family housing buildings means lower utility bills, less costly maintenance, and less turnover.
In this session, we will discuss how an Owner and Architect teamed together to develop LEED certified
affordable housing that offers high quality sustainable apartments to low income tenants. Using the
Breckenridge Place project in Ithaca, NY as an example, we will discuss the relationship between
NYSERDA’s Multi-Family Performance Program, Energy Star LEED for Homes, and the creative finance
structure with which the owner made this project a success.
