Whereas functionalist and risk theories emphasize social engineering that is intended to inform
social policies, conflict and (de)constructionist theories emphasize rhetoric that is intended to
gain acquiescence. Yet unlike conflict theorists, social constructionists are unwilling to claim
the universal, or real, character of their own arguments. This unwillingness is grounded in their
postmodern assumption that “appeals to reality” are always ideology-laden. Accordingly,
relativism (i.e., the absence of an indisputable reality) is a choice, not an ultimatum. Rather than
constructing a reality, the social constructionist deconstructs others’ constructions by revealing
the rhetorical (i.e., persuasive) strategies they use to keep their audience from reflecting on their
articulations.
