Read and re-read the arguments Locke gives in Paragraphs numbered 4 and 5 on page 87.
Explain Locke’s reasons in these paragraphs for supposing we can trust our senses. Do
you think Locke has successfully shown that sense perception can give us reliable
information about the material world? Why or why not?
Things to consider: What would a proponent of the dream or evil demon argument say in
response to Locke? Does Locke have an answer to the dream argument? Explain your
reasoning.
Be sure to write as clearly as you can. Be very clear both on what Locke’s
arguments are, and what your own argument is in response. Be sure to give
yourself plenty of time to read and think over the two paragraphs before you start
to write. Do not use any other sources.
