Each essay will receive a least two independent readings, with a third in case of
disagreements
Essays will be scored holistically on a four point scale
Scoring will occur during February
Students will receive scores and explanations for the meaning of that score by the
end of spring semester
Scores have no effect on transcripts or academic career
Feedback letters are designed to provide additional feedback the student may find
useful in evaluating their own educational progress
The purpose of this assessment is to give us data to tell us how well we are teaching
the humanities as a whale. We do not keep track of individual scores of individual
instructors. We need the student ID # to help us to track the progress of students who
have taken composition courses vs. those who have not. Our MCC ethical statement of
assessment would not permit any other such approach to assessment.
Statement of Ethical Conduct and Assessment: The Metropolitan Community
Colleges recognize that the activities associated with assessment must be conducted in an
ethical and professional manner. Information, data, and assessment activities designed to
present an aggregate picture of assessment of MCC shall in no way be used to evaluate
individual students or faculty. Also, students, faculty, and staff associated with
assessment activities or projects will be treated in a manner that follows accepted
practices for dealing with human subjects. The MCC initiatives are designed and
conducted so as to improve teaching and learning as well as overall institutional
improvement.
