CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS IN WORKING WITH DIVERSE POPULATIONS Program Description This day-long training will address salient cultural considerations for working with diverse populations, including Euro-Americans. Multi-cultural frameworks will be provided as a conceptual means to think about each group. Ethnographic techniques will be shared to facilitate communication and engagement. Interactive and experiential opportunities, videos, and concrete examples will be the means of communicating this information. Program Objectives: Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss several treatment frameworks for working with culturally diverse groups; 2. List 2 factors associated with research and ethical issues that relate to treatment; 3. Explainthe myths, stereotypes, and stigma associated with each group and it’s implications for treatment; 4. Identify your own culture and values, and assess how one’s own identity contrasts and interacts with those different from oneself; 5. Apply the four deceptively simple techniques of ethnographic interviewing that will enhance the treatment process. 6. Discuss issues sometimes noted as “resistance to treatment” in a manner that demonstrates cultural awareness (i.e., verbal and non-verbal behaviors, barriers to treatment, etc.). Target Audience This workshop is appropriate for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse service professionals. This includes psychologists, social workers, marriage and family counselors, mental retardation/developmental disabilities staff, child and family clinicians.
