ireplaysanecessaryroleinColorado’secosystems.However,the
interruptionofhistoric irecycleshasledtothedangerousbuildupoffuelsin
somewildlandareas.

Duringwildland
ireevents,publicand ire ightersafetyisthehighestpriority.
WhilepropertylossesexperiencedduringtheFourmileCanyonFireweretragic,
therewasnolossoflifethankstoanef icient,coordinatedemergencyresponse.

Therearenoguaranteeswhenitcomestoprotectinghomesfromwild
ires,but
whenhomeownerscreatedefensiblespaceandcommunitiesestablishfuel
treatments,chancesincreasethatstructureswillsurvive.
Wehaveasharedresponsibilitytoreducewild irerisk.


efforttothindensestandsoftreesandotherlargefuels—italsorequiresregular
maintenancelikekeepingtallgrassesmowed,pruningshrubsandclearingdebris
fromroofsandgutterstoremaineffective.

