He didn’t like to go to the market before this time. In the mornings the market was full of mothers, rushing around with small children, trying to get their shopping done, before picking up their older children from school. At lunchtime, local traders and office workers stopped at the stalls to pick up their lunch. After this rush, a brief calm descended on the market in the early afternoon. At this time, the old man could shuffle around the stalls slowly. He would stop to talk to the traders he knew well, having visited them for well over ten years. Many would ask after his health and his children who were now working in big cities. Some would turn back and get the best fruit and vegetables that they had set aside for him. This was old man’s time for interacting with the world. This was the time between the solitude of morning prayers and the preparation of a simple meal in the evening from his afternoon purchases.
