Mapping

Exercise 8

Overview

This is Exercise 8 because I want to keep the exercise #s the same as the module #s.

The objective of this exercise is to give you practice in making maps for specific purposes. You are going to use the map you made in exercise 2 of module 8 and the GeoDatabase you made in

Exercise 4 to two maps that meet the map requirements for the course.

1.

A revision of the map you made in exercise 2 of module 8 that is a) different from that map and 2) meets the requirements for this course (see below).

2.

One or two maps with data for use by recreation planners.

What gets turned in

1.

The maps (70%)

2.

A paragraph describing your rational for the two recreation planning maps (20%)

3.

A Reflection page with your name, Course #, Ex 8 and the date on the back on the back

(10%) of the grade!

The Assignment

1. Revise the map from exercise 2 so that it is different but still follows the suggestions made in the PowerPoint for 10/11/05. This is very straight forward (for a change) and I provide little instruction.

2. Make one or two maps (whatever you consider the best way to present the needed information) that you think recreation planners for the Town could use in developing recreation areas in the town, You should probably review the Symbology Module before doing the exercises. You should consider using the Landsat satellite Cover data for vegetative cover information. The classes (grid code) for the cover data are:

(1) 1 = Hardwood cover

(2) 2 = Softwood cover

(3) 3 = Wetlands

(4) 4 = Agriculture

(5) 5 = Urban

(6) 6 = Water

(7) 7 = Clouds

Other data that is suggested is tax parcel data (the town would be particularly interested in purchasable parcels that had forested cover and were owned by the state, the county, or the

Town). Access to water would also be of interest as would relatively flat terrain for snowmobiling and more rugged terrain for hiking.

Use your imagination. Go for it!
