Tourism in the Spanish Balearic islands
Balearic resorts to introduce ‘eco-tax’
From Giles Tremlett in Madrid
Tourists visiting Majorca and other
Spanish holiday islands will soon be
ordered to pay a green tax to help
pay for the damage they inflict on
some of Spain’s most beautiful
natural landscapes.
The £10 per head tax will either
be levied at airports or added to the
hotel bills of the millions of tourists
who travel each year to Majorca,
Ibiza, Minorca and Formentera.
The proceeds from the tax,
expected to be £90 million a year,
will be used to repair the harm done
by more than 30 years of intensive
tourism in Europe’s busiest holiday
spot, according to plans put forward
by the islands’ government.
This has been proposed by a
coalition of Greens, Socialists and
island nationalists who won recent
elections in the Islands on a political
platform that pledged to put a halt to
further tourism developments.
The issue was popular with native
Majorcans, even though they have
become Spain’s richest people
thanks to tourism. Voters decided
they had had enough of drunken
package tourists. They were also
concerned that a fifth of the island is
now in foreign hands.
