ENG 2D – ISU: Novel Study Step One: Choose the book and start reading. You are required to read a book that you have never read before. Please choose a book that is at least 200 pages in length. Step Two: The Formal Paragraphs Assignment You will write two formal paragraphs throughout this unit. Both will be peer edited. Your topics are the following: a) Show how the setting of the novel is used to create mood. b) “Without contraries is no progression”. W. Blake Show how conflict results in change for a character in the novel. Each paragraph must adhere to proper argument paragraph structure, which will be reviewed in class. All rough work must be submitted for BOTH paragraphs in order for the good copy to be accepted. The setting paragraph will be assessed formatively while the conflict paragraph will be given a summative mark. Step Three: Creative Presentation In a maximum of three minutes, you will creatively present the following information to the class: a theme that has emerged in the novel; a discussion of key elements, such as character development, plot, setting, important images/symbols, etc., that help to develop your theme. The day before your presentation, you must submit point-form preparation notes, which will be evaluated for quality and thoroughness. You may choose one of the following ways to express the elements of your novel: an interview with a main character; an author book-signing scenario; an artifact box/ object that is relatable to the novel; an original painting or poster; anything else you can think of (with teacher approval in advance). The presentation may be delivered "live" in front of the class OR prepared ahead of time and filmed. In some formats, such as a book-signing scenario, it may be desirable to include the appearance of another student, but you need to be the focal point of your presentation. That is, you should play the main role and do most of the talking. Please arrange for any required equipment with your teacher in advance.
