Brave New World – Essay Topics SEMESTER II Choose one of the following topics and write a three­argument literary essay. Your essay will consist of an introduction, three arguments, and a conclusion. You must include a first page, in­text parenthetical citations, and a Works Cited page that follow M.L.A. format, which is outlined in the Centennial Communications Guide and The OWL at Purdue websites. 1. In the novel, Brave New World, various passages and motifs are borrowed from works of William Shakespeare, including tragedies such as Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Othello. To what extent does Huxley’s novel meet the criteria of tragedy? 2. “The kernel of everything reactionary and tyrannical in society is the impoverishment of the means of verbal communication.” (Northrop Frye) What role does language play in the creation and perpetuation of a society? Consider how verbal expression creates the realities of various characters and the World State. 3. Using examples from the novel, Brave New World, discuss what role adversity, and the resultant suffering, should have in the human experience. 4. Discuss the role of Bernard and Lenina’s visit to the Savage Reservation within the context of the entire novel. You may consider portrayals of religious beliefs, living conditions and human relationships.
