ENGLISH 3U1 – ISU NOVEL STUDY
1. SELECTION: Choose a novel to read independently. The novel should be by a reputable author,
preferably an award winner, and should be written at a level suitable for grade eleven. Your teacher
must approve your choice of novel.
2. PROPOSAL: Submit a justification for your novel including the following information:
your name, title of the novel and name of the author. In addition, write a well structured paragraph (100150 words) in which you present a thoughtful explanation for your choice of this particular novel.

3. CREATIVE ELEMENT:

Express one of the central themes of the novel by creating one of the following:
1. Create an original book jacket for your novel. The front cover should consist of a
painting/drawing/computer image/photograph etc. which captures the theme of the novel.
2. Create an original work of art. Consider one of the following: a piece of music, a painting, a sculpture,
a photograph (or a series of photos), a model, computer graphics etc .
3. Write a minimum of 30 lines of poetry that captures a theme in your novel.
4. Write a prequel or sequel to your novel. (750-1000 words). Maintain the tone, characterization and
style of the original work.
5. Choreograph and perform an original dance that captures significant moments in your novel. Focus on
character, theme, mood or plot. Your performance may be "live" or videotaped.
6. Write and record a radio play which develops character, mood and/or theme(s). (700-800 words). Use
sound effects and music to help your radio play "come alive".
N.B.: Each creative activity will be marked according to the criteria of the medium you choose.
4. ANALYSIS OF CREATIVE ELEMENT:

Include with your creative submission, a brief summary of your novel (100 words) and a concise written
analysis of your work (350-400 words), explaining your intent, your method and how your piece
represents the central theme in the novel. You must be very specific in this justification (e.g. use
technical terminology):
•
for poetry refer to poetic devices you have used (imagery, figurative language, rhythm etc.
•
for prose, point of view or narrative perspective, use of figurative language
•
for script and presentation, decisions regarding level of language, interaction of characters
•
for visual art, the medium itself and the method by which you manipulate it
•
for music, elements like key or time signatures, instrumentation (or lyrics), tempo and dynamics
•
for dance, consideration of style, movement, flow, musical interpretation, costuming etc.
N.B.: Your written analysis will be marked on structure, depth and accuracy of your analysis. Be sure to
include specific references to your artistic endeavour and to the theme of the novel.
5. ESSAY OUTLINE:

Develop an essay outline, which includes the following:
•
a working thesis
•
a summary of your supporting arguments, in which the summary of each argument begins with a
working topic sentence, followed by a paragraph clearly detailing your supporting evidence.
Include useful quotations that you could use to support each argument.
N.B.: You do not need to write a complete essay for this assignment. Practice at drafting a coherent
outline will prove invaluable for future tasks, both in this course and ENG 4U1.
