ENG 1P1: Poetry Anthology Summary Sheet
For each of the poems that you have selected to use for analysis you must complete the
following information:
1. Paraphrase the poem – Rewrite the poem in your own words. You do not have to
keep the rhyme scheme.
2. Identify the poem’s theme -The theme is the central idea of the poem or the
message that the poet is trying to convey through his/her writing of the poem.
3. Identify the rhyme scheme - If there is no rhyme scheme, you should include that
the poem is “ free verse”
4. Poetic Devices – Identify and record the author’s use of any poetic devices in the
poem. You should identify the most relevant devices used. Aim for at least two
per poem. You have a handout that outlines many different types of poetic
devices an author may use.
5. Comment – Include your reasoning for selecting this poem. Why is this poem
effective?
Example:
Poem: “The Piercing Chill I Feel” by Taniguchi Buson
The piercing chill I feel.
My dead wife’s comb, in our bedroom,
Under my heel.

I feel a cold shiver when I stepped on my wife’s comb. It hit my heel. She is dead, and the
memory of her still pierces my soul when I am reminded of her.
The theme: The emotional pain associated with the loss of a loved one is more hurtful than
physical pain.
There rhyme scheme of this poem is ABA.
The author uses imagery throughout the poem. When the author states “My dead wife’s comb…
under my heel” the reader can identify the feeling of physical pain that occurs when stepping on
something sharp. This also translates into the emotional pain that the author feels in
remembering the loss of his wife.
This is an effective poem because the imagery appeals to the senses of the reader. The reader feels
as though he/she is experiencing the feeling of pain associated with both the physical (stepping on
the comb) but also the emotional loss (of his dead wife) that the author describes. When the
author states that he feels a “piercing chill” it demonstrates that he is in a great deal of emotional
pain. The chill he feels is not just the physical pain of stepping on a comb, but the reminder of
the loss of his wife. This imagery makes the poem effective because the reader can identify with
the reader.
