Business-Critical Continuity™ for Telecommunications Customer Case Study Improving Telecommunications Density and Efficiency Less Energy, Less Real Estate, More Bandwidth The need to meet subscriber demand for sophisticated multimedia services and support a converging IP network while still reducing their cost per bit led this European operator to seek out an expert infrastructure solution that would increase their central office datacenter and core site density by 150%, power and cooling capacity by 100%, and efficiency by more than 20%. The client wanted a formula that could be implemented and verified once, then replicated to rapidly consolidate their numerous regional data centers. Specific requirements were: n Keep the site live without any service interruptions throughout implementation n Design a solution to that could enable the operator to cut the number of their data centers by 50%, without footprint expansion at the remaining sites CLIENT BUSINESS Global Telecommunications Provider European Operating Company CLIENT RELATIONSHIP Over 20 years THE NEED In order to meet subscriber demand for multimedia technologies, this service provider needed 2X the power and cooling capacity of their regional data centers in the same footprint. THE SOLUTION Emerson Network Power implemented IT and power distribution racks, chilled water cooling system with in-line cooling, and highly efficient DC power systems with remote monitoring to increase the power and cooling capacity of the site, improve overall site efficiency and meet the client’s demand for zero downtime. THE BENEFIT n Strategically reorganized layout for growth n 150% density increase n 27% PUE improvement n Replicable model for other sites n >100% power & cooling capacity improvement n 26% reduction in OpEx* n 20% reduction in needed CapEx* KEY COMPONENTS nKnürr ® IT and power distribution racks nLiebert® chilled water cooling system n AC and DC battery backup systems nNetSure™ DC power systems and inverters nENEC ™ metering and remote monitoring nNetPerform™ interdisciplinary project management and consulting team EN601CRA-EUOPCO / 0912 n Improve site PUE and density n Increase power and cooling capacity from ~400W/m2 to 1000W/m2 average and up to 2000W/m2 in dedicated high density sections n Enhance equipment layout to minimize hot spot issues and conflicting air flows n Redesign existing site layout to accommodate future network equipment n Improve energy efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions and operating costs A Holistic Approach to Improving Site Efficiency Emerson Network Power determined that a holistic approach was required to achieve the customer’s objectives. The operator needed to simplify the layout of their equipment while improving the integration of their DC and AC power systems, cooling and battery backup, and leverage metering and remote monitoring as well. A comprehensive site audit by Emerson Network Power’s team of expert engineers laid the foundation for discussions and the ultimate execution plan. The telecom/ICT equipment would be separated into high/low heat density zones to accommodate cold aisle containment and the ICT rack infrastructure. The DC and AC power plants would be upgraded to increase redundancy and moved to a dedicated power and battery room, improving efficiency and allowing for future growth. Real time monitoring and reporting were also identified as critical to long-term site health and optimization. The operating company agreed and plan execution began. Emerson Network Power rapidly assembled the project team to perform detailed site assessments, design work and assist the customer with proper equipment selection. The final package included: nNetPerform™ site assessment and design engineering services n Knürr Miracel® IT server racks with integrated Liebert® MPX A+B monitored and controlled power distribution units nLiebert® HPC and HPM chilled water cooling system with >1MW capacity, n+1 redundancy, free cooling operation, smart aisle control/regulation, high performance room cooling units with EC fans n In-the-aisle Liebert® CRV cooling units and intelligent iCOM control loop for smart inter working of system 1 Customer Case Study n Redundant (1+1) 48V NetSure™ DC power system of 336kW capacity with NetSure™ DC distribution system and 1 hour battery backup n 400/230V inverter system providing 2 x 225kVA of uninterruptible AC power with 1 hour battery backup nKnürr® cold aisle containment for hot/cold air separation and vast efficiency boost nENEC ™ energy management system to monitor utility AC supply, AC distribution (on each branch level), NetSure™ DC power and distribution system, inverter and distribution system, cooling system, individual PDUs and ambient site temperature nNetPerform™ implementation, startup and commissioning services and equipment training Moving forward, Emerson Network Power can easily perform advanced tuning and optimization services as well as ongoing site maintenance and support to this customer. High Density Site Solution By implementing the recommended high density solution, all targeted KPIs were met by the operator: elimination of hot spots, increased energy efficiency, reduction of floor space, and flexibility for future expansion and consolidation of sites. In addition, the capital expenditure required to fulfill future expansion was reduced by over 20% compared to the customer’s expected, traditional technologies. KPIs Achieved Metric Annual Average PUE Datacenter Density (Power & Cooling Capacity) Existing Site/Technologies 2.03 2 ~400W/m With Emerson Network Power 1.49 — 27% improvement (with facility restrictions & critical legacy equipment) 1.3 proposed (if facility restrictions were eliminated) 1000W/m2 average, up to 2000W/m2 for high density — >100% improvement Capital Expenditure to Achieve Goals $3.6M $2.8M — 20% reduction Payback Period N/A <2 Years* *Compared to fulfilling network demands using existing site and technologies. Emerson Network Power was able to improve overall site efficiency by 27%. Without disrupting service to subscribers, the power and cooling capacity of the data center was nearly tripled. Floor space was strategically reorganized to accommodate future network equipment and growth. Finally, the site has provided a blueprint for achieving the customer’s goal of 50% reduction in number of sites across their network. Meeting the Telecom Energy Needs of Tomorrow Emerson Network Power’s holistic site solution approach has helped solve similar challenges in other central office and critical-node MSC/MTSO environments. Our engineering experts consolidate existing equipment at the site, integrate high density network elements like blade servers, and improve overall site efficiency to help telecommunications service providers keep pace with the growing energy needs required by the multimedia technologies their customers demand.
