Biographical Note
Rai Peterson regularly teaches classes in poetics, queer literature, modern literature, and American
literature survey courses. Occasionally she teaches special topics ranging from traditional book-binding
to writing for new media. Peterson publishes mostly about American and British women writers in Paris
between the World Wars, but frequently returns to the topic of her dissertation, E. E. Cummings. She is
currently working on a book-length literary biography of Solita Solano as well as editing a collection of
her journalism. Peterson has held the H. D. Fellowship in American Literature at the Beinecke Library at
Yale University.
Historical Note
This Ball State University senior seminar course surveys the tradition of manifesto-writing in European
and American literature, emphasizing the bold, non-traditional work of the early Modernist writers.
Students also receive instruction in artist’s book binding techniques. Each student’s term project will be
writing and binding, in an edition of four, his or her personal manifesto.

This collection contains book projects written, designed, and created by students in Rai Peterson's
Manifesto Book Arts senior seminar (ENG 444) at Ball State University between 2010 and 2015.
