TUCSON, Ariz. – August 16, 2010 – Professor Bruce J. Ellis, Ph.D., John and Doris Norton
Endowed Chair in Fathers, Parenting and Families at the University of Arizona’s Frances
McClelland Institute for Children, Youth, and Families, was named winner of the 2010
George A. Miller Award at the American Psychological Association’s 118th Annual
Convention, Saturday, in San Diego. This is the second time in five years that Dr. Ellis has
received the coveted award, which recognizes the best recent theoretical paper in general
psychology.

Ellis’ paper, titled “Fundamental Dimensions of Environmental Risk: The Impact of Harsh
versus Unpredictable Environments on the Evolution and Development of Life history
Strategies,” appeared in the journal, Human Nature. The editor of the journal, which is
distributed by Springer Science to international audiences, said the publication normally
doesn’t publish reviews, but Ellis’ paper “is the kind of exception that we really like because
it is a seminal contribution to life history science.”

In the article, Ellis, and contributing authors Aurelio Jose Figueredo, Ph.D., Department of
Psychology, University of Arizona; Barbara H. Brumbach, Ph.D., Department of Psychology,
Northern Arizona University, and UA graduate student Gabriel L. Schlomer, synthesize
theory and data from the field of life history evolution to advance a new theory of variation
in human development. They examine how harshness (externally caused levels of death and
disability) and unpredictability (variation in harshness over time and space) influence the
varying rates at which individuals physically develop and reproduce.

“This article is likely to become a landmark paper that will impact the thinking and
programs of research of scholars in several fields within the social and behavioral sciences
for years to come,” said University of Minnesota professors Jeffry A. Simpson, Ph.D.,
professor of psychology, and Vladas Griskevicius, Ph.D., assistant professor, Carlson School
of Management, who nominated the work for the award. “It highlighted and integrated
several previously unrecognized factors that affect how fast individuals grow up, the extent
to which they engage in risky sexual behavior, the levels of investment they devote to their
children, how many children they have, and so forth.”

Soyeon Shim, Ph.D., professor and director of the Norton School of Family and Consumer
Sciences, home of the UA’s Frances McClelland Institute, said the paper demonstrates the
value of applying evolutionary thinking in pursuit of answers to some of the most vexing
questions related to the health and well-being of children, youth and families. “It
underscores the mission of the Frances McClelland Institute and is an example of the
impact that our cross-disciplinary approach to research can have not only on university

faculty and students, but also on families and organizations that work with them in
communities across the nation.”
The genius of the paper’s approach, Simpson and Griskevicius added, “was realizing, based
on cutting-edge research in evolutionary biology, that environmental factors tend to move
evolution and development in the same direction in a mutually reinforcing manner.” This
approach, they said, not only provided a framework for connecting and organizing
psychological, sociological, and biological thinking and evidence on the determinants of
sexual and reproductive behavior, but also suggested new hypotheses and lines of research.

“It would be difficult to overstate what a radical departure this perspective is from
conventional views of environmental risk,” they added. “We have no doubt that this
masterful review and theoretical synthesis will affect investigators in multiple fields of
inquiry for many years to come.”

About Hot Off The Press (Release)
We get dozens of press releases each day. Back in the old days of the Tucson Citizen
newspaper, these releases would get passed around the newsroom and several would be
turned into news stories.
Now that we're a citizen journalism site, we've decided to take these releases and post
them verbatim. It's still information readers will want to know.
TucsonCitizen.com site administrators decide which releases get posted. Not every
release sent to us will appear.
If you want to submit a release for consideration, send them to news@tucsoncitizen.com.
