Mission
The mission of the Arizona Pest Management Center (APMC) is to support College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) faculty in their efforts to develop and deliver
outstanding Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs that address the needs of
Arizona’s citizens. This includes IPM programs serving agriculture, urban communities
and natural areas.
Activities
The APMC engages with faculty, partner organizations, clientele and other interested
stakeholders to:
• Solicit and document input on pest management needs in Arizona
• Secure external funding to support pest management research and outreach programs
• Evaluate & improve pest management programs, and assess their impact on end-users
• Improve communication among all IPM stakeholders, including UA faculty, state
partners, clientele groups, the Western IPM Center and federal IPM programs
Organization & Management
All IPM programs at UA are organized within the APMC, an umbrella organization
directed by the IPM Coordinating Committee, a steering committee made up of UA
faculty from across the state with expertise in entomology, plant pathology and weed
science. The APMC maintains five program foci: Detection & Diagnostics, Agricultural
IPM, Community IPM, IPM Assessment, and Pesticide Education. Within each focus,
program teams actively develop, manage, support and implement UA’s IPM programs. A
dedicated faculty member, the IPM Program Manager, serves as Associate Director of the
APMC, providing leadership and managing daily activities and communications.
A Strategic Use of Resources
Our IPM programs are staffed by an energetic, but limited number of faculty and staff
from multiple departments, agricultural centers and counties. The activities of the APMC
help keep our programs strategically focused, relevant, and well positioned to compete
for IPM funding both regionally and nationally. Our goal is to create a working
environment in which the science and implementation of IPM can thrive in Arizona.
