HCSA Biography or Autobiography Assignment
Read a biography or an autobiography of your choice for a leader in hockey, business,
history, science, politics, or another sport. Write a book report for your choice of book.
An autobiography is the story of a person’s life as written by the person from a first-person’s point of view. A
biography is written by a third party to document the subject’s life. The goal of your book report is to
summarize the major achievements and events in the person’s life and to make a recommendation about the
book.
There are five parts required for your book report (modified from Maggie Hira).
In the first part of the book report, describe the subject of the biography, including why this person is famous
or notable. Be sure to include the most important facts about the person’s achievements and leadership skills.
You may also want to explain why you chose to write a book report on this person.
In the second part of the book report, focus on describing the subject's early life including where he or she
grew up, the type of education she received and information about her family members and team mates.
In the third part, list at least five major events that occurred in this person's life, excluding the dates of birth
and death. Focus on important, life-changing events and notable accomplishments such as athletic or artistic
achievement, the winning of awards, any important discoveries and any other notable contributions to the world
or to a team. Basically, you should chronicle in much more detail why this person is notable.
In the fourth part, give your personal opinion of the subject. Describe your thoughts on this person's
accomplishments and contributions. Explain how you think this person impacted the world with his existence.
Finally, in the last part of the book report, describe whether or not you enjoyed reading the book. Give some
concrete reasons as to why you liked or disliked the book, and tell if you would recommend this book to be read
by others. You might include information about the biographer and his writing style at this point as well.
