Fall Admissions Recruitment Recap As the vibrant colors of the fall foliage are rapidly fading and the leaves are slowly succumbing to the winds and falling one after another, it is hard to believe that the fall semester is already winding down and that the holiday season is upon us! As you are probably all gearing up to soon-upcoming finals week, I hope that the semester has been successful for all of you and your respective students. Over the last three months, myself and other members of our admissions staff have had the pleasure to travel across the nation to attend various student recruitment events and meet a large number of prospective students as well as current applicants to our DO program. LMU-DCOM Celebrated Class of 2016 White Coat Ceremony Virginia: Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg; University of Virginia, Charlottesville. A month after their arrival on campus for their orientation, the LMU-DCOM DO Class of 2016 finally walked across the stage to receive their symbolic white coats during their White Coat Ceremony, held on Saturday, September 29, in LMU’s Tex Turner Arena. The keynote speaker was Dr. William G. Anderson, past president of the American Osteopathic Association from 1994 to 1995, and the first African-American to hold that office. The White Coat Ceremony is a special ceremony among medical schools across the nation, designed to mark a student’s entrance into medical school. The tradition originated at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, where they held the firstever White Coat Ceremony in 1993. The White Coat Ceremony is always a highlyanticipated event and over a thousand people were present to witness this happy occurrence, including students’ family members and friends, and LMU-DCOM faculty, staff and board members. In order to commemorate this happy occurrence for the Class of 2016 and their families, members of the Class of 2015 joined forces to put together a traditional Tennessee barbeque feast for all approximately one-thousand people to enjoy on the evening prior to the ceremony. The meal was a great example of the warm and supportive family atmosphere and camaraderie which we all pride ourselves on at LMU-DCOM. What Have Our D.O. Students Been Up To This Semester? Below are brief updates of what each of our current DO classes have been working on this semester: Class of 2013: Students from this class have been out conducting their second year of the rotations cycle, in hospitals and clinics across the nation. During this time, they have also been interviewing for the residency placements for which they applied to in the summer. Residency programs usually conduct candidate interviews throughout the fall and pick their matches in January and February. DO students are able to apply to both MD or DO residencies, whereas MD students are only able to apply to MD residencies. Class of 2014: These students have been out since August completing their first semester of the two-year rotations cycle. Our class of 2014 is also spread out across the country in many different locations from local Appalachia to places as far as Chicago, Maine, Key West, California and anywhere in between. This semester, our campus guests have come from all over the nation and we have hosted group visits from the University of Virginia-Wise, CarsonNewman College (Jefferson City, TN) and Union College (Barbourville, KY). Class of 2015: Aside from following LMU-DCOM’s tradition of welcoming and helping the new first-year students feel at home, our secondyear students have been successfully progressing through their tough 4th-semester curriculum, which includes the following: 7 weeks studying the Cardiovascular System; 4 weeks studying the Respiratory System; 4 weeks studying the Renal System; 4 weeks studying Hematology & the Lymph System; LMU-DCOM’s Fall Osteopathic Medicine Awareness Conference & Open House Event A Success! On the beautiful and sunny day of Saturday, November 10, members of the LMU-DCOM Admissions Staff, along with the school’s Interim Dean, Dr. Michael Wieting, several other faculty members and current DO students, had the pleasure of hosting 50 guests on our beautiful campus for our Fall 2012 Osteopathic Medicine Awareness Conference & Open House event. The event began at 9:30am and ended with a nice lunch enjoyed with the gorgeous views of our scenic campus. The above are done in combination with: 15 weeks of the third section of the Osteopathic Principles and Practice series (Osteopathic musculoskeletal study); and 15 weeks of clinical-setting practice with our standardized patients at our on-site standardized clinic. At the end of this semester, the Class of 2015 students will complete a Clinical Exam before going on their two-week Christmas break. For a detailed view of our DO curriculum, click here. Class of 2016: As their first semester in medical school slowly winds down, below is the curriculum these first-year students have been following this fall: 19 weeks of Medical Gross Anatomy; 19 weeks of Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine I; 15 weeks of Foundations of Modern Healthcare I; 15 weeks of the first section of the Osteopathic Principles and Practice series (Osteopathic musculoskeletal study); and 14 weeks of clinical-setting practice with our standardized patients at our on-site standardized clinic. Individual and group tours, and Our Fall 2012 Osteopathic Medicine Awareness Conference & Open House event, which took place on Saturday, November 10. These OMAC/Open House events are hosted four times a year and are open to prospective students, undergraduate pre-medical/pre-health advisors and faculty members, and anyone else interested in learning more about osteopathic medicine and about the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in particular. The events offer a very complete overview of the osteopathic medicine profession, of our state-ofthe-art institution and of our first-class DO program. The agenda for these vents include: Osteoblast 2012 On Wednesday, August 22, the Class of 2015 hosted the Osteoblast event. This is an annual event organized by our second-year students, aimed at showcasing to our newly-arrived first-year students all the clubs and organizations available at LMU-DCOM. The event always takes place after the first big exam of the year and is a great way for students to wind down and enjoy themselves following long and stressful hours of studying. A total of 22 booths were setup representing the 19 LMU-DCOM clubs as well as the class officers, the Community Service Committee and Sigma Sigma Phi. A catered dinner was provided for all to enjoy while mingling and getting to know each other better. And to top off this fun and exciting event, this year, our STORM club (Student Tactical Operational Rescue Medicine) organized an activity that involved a helicopter landing by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in our LMU-DCOM parking lot! If you are interested in attending our next OMAC & Open House event scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2013, be sure to pencil down the date on your calendar! An e-mail invitation will be sent to you in late January. In the meantime, we ask all faculty advisors and students to please share this information with others who may also be interested in attending and we certainly hope to see as many of you at our next event! OMED 2012 Conference Osteoblast 2012 Hospital Day 2012 On Wednesday, October 31, LMU-DCOM hosted its annual Hospital Day. This event welcomes representatives from hospitals, clinics and health systems from across the nation to present employment, internship and sponsorship opportunities for clinical rotations and residency programs. The event is a great networking opportunity for our current students. This fall, a total of 40 hospitals, clinics and health systems attended our event, coming from as far west as Oklahoma and as far north as Michigan and New York. Just like every year, LMUDCOM had yet again great representation at this year’s Annual OMED Medical Conference & Exposition, which took place in San Diego, CA, from Sunday, October 7, through Thursday, October 11. OMED is an annual event in which DO students, educators and physicians from across the nation gather for a series of workshops, meetings, discussions and other activities including a community service event. Over 50 members of the LMU-DCOM family attended this year’s conference, including students, alumni, faculty and staff members. Hospital Day 2012 Other Student Events, Volunteer Work & Activities Mini Med School: Every year, our students take pride in contributing to the local community in several ways. In October, our students participated in Mini-Med School, a program in which they visit area elementary schools and set up different stations for the children to learn a variety of basic health-related topics and issues. October Mini Med School, Union County, TN Relay For Life: The annual Harrogate City Relay For Life, held at the Harrogate City Park, is another event our students always enjoy participating in, and doing their share to contribute to the fight against a major global disease. Harrogate City Relay For Life Other Fun Activities: We all know that medical school is a full-time commitment with busy course schedules and very stressful and rigorous studying requirements. Nonetheless, in order to maintain sanity and a healthy mindset, it is important for students to unwind regularly. Between the many student clubs available at LMUDCOM, as well as events planned by our student activities coordinator, our DO students have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of exciting and fun activities throughout the fall semester: A White Water Rafting trip, on Saturday, DCOM Flag Football Intramurals October 22, in Ocoee, TN; A Haunted Corn Maze trip, on Thursday, October 18, at Oakes Farm, in Corryton, TN; The inaugural Annual DCOM Ping-Pong Classic as well as shuffle board and dodge ball tournaments; Sports intramurals, including softball, volleyball and flag football; The annual Fall Festival, open to students and their families, and featuring games, a pumpkin patch, crafts, a prize raffle and delicious food! The traditional Annual Mr. DCOM Competition, featuring a variety of fun acts put on by students, as well as a talent show judged by LMU-DCOM faculty members. 2012 Mr. DCOM Competition About LMU’s DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine The DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine is located on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University, in Harrogate, Tenn., a small town nestled in the beautiful mountains of the Appalachian region, only a few miles from the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. The state-of-the-art college was founded on August 1, 2007, and opened its doors to its inaugural class on August 3, 2007. The region’s rural setting is key to upholding LMU-DCOM’s mission of producing outstanding and caring osteopathic physicians who will focus on providing health care in underserved communities in Appalachia and across the nation. In addition to offering the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program, LMU-DCOM also offers a Physician Assistant (PA) program, as well as a DO-MBA program for students wishing to complement their education with a business degree. A Post-baccalaureate Medical Sciences program is also offered for students who need to strengthen their science knowledge and grade point average before applying to the DO program.
