From the President
B. James Dawson, EdD
“Man is not the only animal who
labors; but he is the only one who
improves his workmanship.”
very year, I write a letter such as this one to thank you for the

support you have given to Lincoln Memorial University. Every

to list to prove to you how fast and how strong our institution continues

and expand the academic programs we offer there. The phenomenal success of the
DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine allowed us to increase our class size from 150
to 225 students per year. What a tremendous blessing to be able to make a list like this one, and I could go on and
on with all of the good news happening every day at Lincoln Memorial University. But the best news—what you
and I should both be most proud of—is each of the 4,338 students currently enrolled at our school. I’ve never been
more excited for the quality of students attending our university. I’ve never been prouder of the graduates we are
sending out into the world.

In 1897, a small group of men including General Oliver Otis Howard and Reverend A. A. Myers founded Lincoln
Memorial University and based its mission on the dream of President Abraham Lincoln to bring educational and
cultural opportunities to the Cumberland Gap area. You are a part of their vast, unending dream. You show your
devotion to this worthy cause by giving your time, your talents and your financial support. I hope that you are as
proud as I am every time you look at our campus and every time you meet one of our students. There is much work
still ahead of us, and by continuing to work together, we will continue to make the greatest difference.
Why Philanthropy
Matters
From the Chairman of the Board
O. V. “Pete” DeBusk, ‘65
T
hroughout its history, Lincoln Memorial University has held tight to
its mission - to serve the underserved and to offer the best education
possible to its students. To say that the world has changed since the
University’s beginning more than a hundred years ago is, of course, to state
the obvious. In spite of those changes, however, LMU is providing its
students the opportunity to prepare themselves for the workforce they are
about to enter. Because of your faithful support, Lincoln Memorial University
has never been better, and the beneficiaries of your generosity are the men and
women who leave here, ready to make an impact on their communities.
“I often wonder what our founders
would think if they could walk this
beautiful campus today and see this
amazing growth for themselves.
I am proud to be a Railsplitter,
and I am proud of today’s Lincoln
Memorial University.”
Just think of all we’ve done in recent years. We’ve seen our enrollment grow by nearly 60 percent. We’ve opened the doors
to both Tennessee’s newest medical school and law school. Last year, we completed construction on a state of the art math
and science building that rivals anything you would see at a university many times our size. What an advantage a facility like
this affords our students! We opened two new residence halls in the fall of 2012, and site preparation is now underway for
an additional new residential facility. We have students waiting for a place in those new residence halls, and we need to move
forward with the construction immediately.
LMU | PAGE 2
We need your help. Without the continued support of our alumni and friends, we could never have accomplished all we have
done in recent years. We have come so far, yet we still have a way to go. I often wonder what our founders would think
if they could walk this beautiful campus today and see this amazing growth for themselves. I am proud to be a
Railsplitter, and I am proud of today’s Lincoln Memorial University. Won’t you please contact us
today to see
how you can be a part of the exciting growth that is still to come?

MBA student Noriko Chapman turned her class project into a
book, and a portion of the proceeds from the book’s sale are
going to help Blount County’s Tennessee Rehabilitation Center, a
vocational rehabilitation program serving workers suffering from
all types of emotional and physical disabilities. Chapman, a cancer
survivor, felt a personal connection to the disabled workers trying
to overcome their problems. She used the research she had done
for her class work as the basis of the book, adding her personal
story to make it more interesting. Her professor, Dr. Daryl Green,
also contributed to the content. The book, “Second Chance: An Indepth Case Study on Nonprofit Organization’s Resource Allocation
and Operational Optimization,” is available in paperback from
Amazon.com and as an e-book.

September 2011
LMU launched a new initiative known as Women of Service, inviting
alumni and friends of LMU to a special luncheon at Club LeConte
in Knoxville. The goal was to start a group of women to pursue
service opportunities on behalf of and benefiting the University and
its students. Over 140 women from all walks of life came together
to brainstorm about what the goals for service would include. The
special speaker for the event was Dr. Natalie Shirley, assistant professor
of anatomy at LMU-DCOM and an adjunct faculty member at the
University of Tennessee Anthropology Department. Shirley explained
how service can mean different things to different people, and how
service benefits society in many ways.

October 2011
It was a busy month for the Veterinary Technology Program.
October 9-15 was National Veterinary Technician Week themed
“Pets and Vets Need Techs.” The theme emphasized the
support that veterinary technicians provide on a daily basis for
their clients and patients. Celebrating for one week every year
solidifies the yearly commitment every veterinary technician
gives the profession of veterinary technology, veterinary
assisting and veterinary medicine. On October 21, LMU
hosted the Fall Veterinary Technician Continuing Education
Conference. Topics covered included “Therapeutic Nutrition
for Metabolic Disease” presented by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and
“Christian Veterinary Mission” and “Acupuncture” presented by
local veterinarian Kim Carney.

December 2011
LMU made the official announcement that it would roll out
a new Honors Scholars Program effective with the Fall 2012
semester. The program is aimed at providing deeper and
broader learning opportunities, especially in science and
general education, while pushing its participants to engage,
serve and lead in all aspects of their educational experience.
Dr. Amiel Jarstfer, dean of the School of Arts and Mathematics,
has led the efforts to establish this new opportunity that will
expect more critical reading and writing, thoughtful discussion
and interdisciplinary analysis for its participants.

Lincoln Memorial University celebrated National Athletic
Training Month throughout the month. The Athletic
Training Student Association (ATSA) hosted a 5K run, an
open house for prospective students and appreciation
events for LMU’s athletic training students. National Athletic
Training Month was established to advise active people
on how to prevent injuries at work and at play. Athletic
trainers are unique health care providers who specialize in
the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation
of injuries and illnesses. The National Athletic Trainers
Association (NATA) represents and supports the more than
30,000 members of the athletic training profession through
education and research.

May 2012
LMU released the findings of an economic impact study that
found that the University added $95 million and 2,000 jobs to
the local economy in fiscal year 2010-2011. When comparing
the state economic impact to the regional economic impact,
the impact of LMU on the tri-state is only slightly less than that
on the state of Tennessee, at $94.09 million. The study was
prepared by renowned economist Dr. Gerald Doeksen and his
colleagues at the National Center for Rural Health Works at
Oklahoma State University in Tulsa.

The announcement of the creation of the LMU Police Force was
made during a press conference held on campus. President B.
James Dawson and Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray signed a
Memorandum of Understanding outlining the guidelines for the
creation of the force during the event. LMU’s announcement follows
the enactment of Tennessee Senate Bill 2166 which was sponsored
by Senator Mike Faulk and signed into law by Governor Bill Haslam
in April. The bill gives the Claiborne County sheriff the authority to
deputize all officers on the LMU Police Force. Additionally, the bill
stipulates that all LMU officers will be required to be POST certifiable.
The LMU Board of Trustees and the Claiborne County Commission
have also approved resolutions in favor of the measure.

Congratulations to
the Class of 1940
The class with the largest percentage of members
who gave back to the University was the Class of
1940. We thank them for their continued belief
in the mission and purpose of their institution
as evidenced through their monetary support.
The chart to the left shows that closely
behind the Class of 1940 in second place was
the Class of 1961. The Class of 1948 and the
Class of 1955 came in at third and fourth
place respectively.
If your class is not represented, it is not too
late to change that for 2012-2013. Contact
the Division of University Advancement at
423.869.6394 and find out how you can issue
the challenge to your classmates.

The class of 1961 increased their giving percentage
from 2010-2011 to 2011-2012 by 14%. One great
way to do this is by establishing a class fundraising
project. The class of 1961 purchased Gingko trees as a
beautification project for the LMU campus. These trees
were planted throughout campus to serve as a living
memorial from the class. In the first week of March, a
total of 23 Gingko trees were purchased and planted.
The funds were used to cover the cost of planting the
trees, as well as future maintenance of the trees. There
is a memorial plaque on the campus quad to recognize
this special project.

Music Department
Presents Acclaimed
Chorus Cantus
The Lincoln Memorial University Music Department presented
the vocal ensemble Cantus live in the Sam and Sue Mars
Performing Arts Center in the Duke Hall of Citizenship on
February 14, 2012. Cantus, hailed as the “premier men’s
vocal ensemble in the United States,” presented the Valentine’s
Day concert that included classical and contemporary music.
Cantus is dedicated to music education with a mission to
spread a love of singing to people of all ages. Each year the
ensemble works with over 5,000 student singers in workshops,
master classes and school performances.

Extending a Helping Hand
While the damaging storm that lashed out across the
Southeast in early March 2012 spared the campus, many
parts of Harrogate were not so fortunate. On Monday
following the EF2 tornado, personnel in the Student
Services Office led a team of students in clean-up efforts
at two residences. The staff members and the students
devoted two days to assist their neighbors in
clearing the huge amounts of debris.

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum received a $2,500 grant from the East Tennessee Foundation (ETF)
in September 2011. ETF awarded one such grant in each of the 25 counties it serves in celebration of its 25th
anniversary of thoughtful giving. ETF has often supported the Museum’s efforts to promote public awareness and
appreciation of LMU’s historical legacy of documentary resources relating to Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War and
regional Appalachian history.

Holiday Break on
Medical Mission
LMU | PAGE 26
Several LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine students
and faculty spent their 2012 spring break attending to the
medical needs of folks in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The trip was planned from start to finish by the students.
They acquired and packed the supplies, organized the itinerary
and worked alongside their faculty mentors to provide health
care to the underserved communities they visited. This is just
one example of the many service projects that LMU-DCOM
students participate in annually.

Students
Lincoln Memorial University is fortunate to be able
to award scholarships made possible by the Dr.
Scholl Foundation. Misti Kyte Clabo, a nursing
student at the Blount County (Tenn.) site, received
the scholarship in May 2012. Here is her story.
I wanted to pursue a nursing career for many reasons. The main reason
was my father’s cancer diagnosis. He was diagnosed in 2003 with leukemia
and given one week to live. He survived that week and after one year, he
went to Vanderbilt for a bone marrow transplant. The transplant was not
successful and he died on July 5, 2005. He was only 48 years old. My family
spent most of those two years in the hospital and I felt that the nurses were angels
from heaven watching over my dad. It takes a special person to be able to work
with terminal patients and I hope I can be half as good as those nurses who cared for
my dad. I hope to pursue working in the oncology field after graduation.
LMU | PAGE 31
The Dr. Scholl Foundation Nursing
Scholarship is for an Associate of Science
in Nursing (ASN) student from the
Appalachian region.
After I made the decision to go back to school to pursue
my dream of being a nurse, it seems everything has
fallen into place. My financial situation has always been
the main concern, but I always seem to work it out. I
currently work delivering bread at night in Sevier Co. for
Bimbo Bakeries. We sell Thomas English muffins and Arnold
bread. I work 10 p.m.-7 a.m. five nights a week. It gets a little
exhausting but so far I have been able to manage. I grew up in
the Sevier County area. I graduated from Gatlinburg Pittman in
1996 and began working. I began taking classes at Walters State
Community College in 2008 and have not had a semester off since.
I have one sister and two brothers. I will be the first in my immediate
family to graduate college.

H
ow excited we are that you have read our 2011-2012

most valued for your support, and we always want to keep you

“ We make a
living by what we
get, but we make
a life by what
we give.”
~Winston Churchill
We continue to build on the courageous legacy of our past, the strength of our
present and the vision for our future. We all can be builders and so we ask ourselves the question,
“What role do I play in building the future for Lincoln Memorial University?”
As supporters, we each have a role to play, and together we have accomplished some bold endeavors this year:
new residence halls, a new math and science facility, a new role in Cumberland Gap, proposed new athletic
facilities, fiscal stability and new research opportunities for our students and faculty. Yes, we are all builders at LMU,
and we make a difference...one life at a time.

Thank you again for giving your resources to make LMU an even stronger university. Is our University better
because we are here? I say a resounding YES!

Building a
Living Legacy
The Bridge Builder
An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fears for him.
But he turned when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
The builder lifted his old gray head:
“Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said,
“There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.”
~ by Will Allen Dromgoole, circa 1900 ~

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near,
“You are wasting strength with building here:
Your journey will end with the ending day,
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide –
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?”
