HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 20 Honor Roll of Donors 2011-2012 | Page 2 11 – 12 Lincoln Memorial University | Page 3 Honor Roll of Donors 2011-2012 From the President B. James Dawson, EdD “Man is not the only animal who labors; but he is the only one who improves his workmanship.” very year, I write a letter such as this one to thank you for the The Collected Works of Abraham support you have given to Lincoln Memorial University. Every Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, year, there are countless new improvements and new opportunities to list to prove to you how fast and how strong our institution continues Volume II, “First Lecture on to grow. In the past year, we’ve expanded our physical plant facilities with Discoveries and Inventions” new student residence halls. We completed construction of the state-of-the-art (April 6, 1858) Math and Science Building, and with the new building, we created room to grow E and expand the academic programs we offer there. The phenomenal success of the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine allowed us to increase our class size from 150 to 225 students per year. What a tremendous blessing to be able to make a list like this one, and I could go on and on with all of the good news happening every day at Lincoln Memorial University. But the best news—what you and I should both be most proud of—is each of the 4,338 students currently enrolled at our school. I’ve never been more excited for the quality of students attending our university. I’ve never been prouder of the graduates we are sending out into the world. LMU | PAGE 1 In 1897, a small group of men including General Oliver Otis Howard and Reverend A. A. Myers founded Lincoln Memorial University and based its mission on the dream of President Abraham Lincoln to bring educational and cultural opportunities to the Cumberland Gap area. You are a part of their vast, unending dream. You show your devotion to this worthy cause by giving your time, your talents and your financial support. I hope that you are as proud as I am every time you look at our campus and every time you meet one of our students. There is much work still ahead of us, and by continuing to work together, we will continue to make the greatest difference. Why Philanthropy Matters From the Chairman of the Board O. V. “Pete” DeBusk, ‘65 T hroughout its history, Lincoln Memorial University has held tight to its mission - to serve the underserved and to offer the best education possible to its students. To say that the world has changed since the University’s beginning more than a hundred years ago is, of course, to state the obvious. In spite of those changes, however, LMU is providing its students the opportunity to prepare themselves for the workforce they are about to enter. Because of your faithful support, Lincoln Memorial University has never been better, and the beneficiaries of your generosity are the men and women who leave here, ready to make an impact on their communities. “I often wonder what our founders would think if they could walk this beautiful campus today and see this amazing growth for themselves. I am proud to be a Railsplitter, and I am proud of today’s Lincoln Memorial University.” Just think of all we’ve done in recent years. We’ve seen our enrollment grow by nearly 60 percent. We’ve opened the doors to both Tennessee’s newest medical school and law school. Last year, we completed construction on a state of the art math and science building that rivals anything you would see at a university many times our size. What an advantage a facility like this affords our students! We opened two new residence halls in the fall of 2012, and site preparation is now underway for an additional new residential facility. We have students waiting for a place in those new residence halls, and we need to move forward with the construction immediately. LMU | PAGE 2 We need your help. Without the continued support of our alumni and friends, we could never have accomplished all we have done in recent years. We have come so far, yet we still have a way to go. I often wonder what our founders would think if they could walk this beautiful campus today and see this amazing growth for themselves. I am proud to be a Railsplitter, and I am proud of today’s Lincoln Memorial University. Won’t you please contact us today to see how you can be a part of the exciting growth that is still to come? The goal was to start a group of women to pursue service opportunities on behalf of and benefiting the University and its students. Over 140 women from all walks of life came together to brainstorm about what the goals for service would include. The special speaker for the event was Dr. Natalie Shirley, assistant professor of anatomy at LMU-DCOM and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee Anthropology Department. Shirley explained how service can mean different things to different people, and how service benefits society in many ways. Sharon Catlett J. These trees were planted throughout campus to serve as a living memorial from the class. In the first week of March, a total of 23 Gingko trees were purchased and planted. The funds were used to cover the cost of planting the trees, as well as future maintenance of the trees. There is a memorial plaque on the campus quad to recognize this special project. Misti Kyte Clabo, a nursing student at the Blount County (Tenn.) site, received the scholarship in May 2012. Here is her story. I wanted to pursue a nursing career for many reasons. The main reason was my father’s cancer diagnosis. He was diagnosed in 2003 with leukemia and given one week to live. He survived that week and after one year, he went to Vanderbilt for a bone marrow transplant. The transplant was not successful and he died on July 5, 2005. He was only 48 years old. My family spent most of those two years in the hospital and I felt that the nurses were angels from heaven watching over my dad. It takes a special person to be able to work with terminal patients and I hope I can be half as good as those nurses who cared for my dad. I hope to pursue working in the oncology field after graduation. LMU | PAGE 31 The Dr. Scholl Foundation Nursing Scholarship is for an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) student from the Appalachian region. After I made the decision to go back to school to pursue my dream of being a nurse, it seems everything has fallen into place. My financial situation has always been the main concern, but I always seem to work it out. I currently work delivering bread at night in Sevier Co. for Bimbo Bakeries. We sell Thomas English muffins and Arnold bread. I work 10 p.m.-7 a.m. five nights a week. It gets a little exhausting but so far I have been able to manage. I grew up in the Sevier County area. I graduated from Gatlinburg Pittman in 1996 and began working. I began taking classes at Walters State Community College in 2008 and have not had a semester off since. I have one sister and two brothers. I will be the first in my immediate family to graduate college. Whitt, MEd H ow excited we are that you have read our 2011-2012 overview for giving at Lincoln Memorial University. You are most valued for your support, and we always want to keep you abreast of our ongoing success which you make possible. “ We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” ~Winston Churchill We continue to build on the courageous legacy of our past, the strength of our present and the vision for our future. We all can be builders and so we ask ourselves the question, “What role do I play in building the future for Lincoln Memorial University?” As supporters, we each have a role to play, and together we have accomplished some bold endeavors this year: new residence halls, a new math and science facility, a new role in Cumberland Gap, proposed new athletic facilities, fiscal stability and new research opportunities for our students and faculty. Yes, we are all builders at LMU, and we make a difference...one life at a time. LMU | PAGE 34 Thank you again for giving your resources to make LMU an even stronger university. Building a Living Legacy The Bridge Builder An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fears for him. But he turned when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. The builder lifted his old gray head: “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.” ~ by Will Allen Dromgoole, circa 1900 ~ LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY | PAGE X “Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting strength with building here: Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again must pass this way. You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide – Why build you the bridge at the eventide?” 6965 Cumberland Gap Parkway Harrogate, Tennessee 37752 423.869.3611 www.LMUnet.edu Lincoln Memorial University | Page 1
