2012-2013
From the President
B. James Dawson, EdD
I
ncredibly, another year has passed in the blink of an eye.
It was another year of substantial growth at Lincoln Memorial
University, and we can thank our proud legacy and loyal supporters
for the bright future we see before us.
“Today’s students learn
in state-of-the-art
laboratories and live in
comfortable well-equipped
housing because of caring
and dedicated individuals
like you.”
This institution was founded on philanthropy. General O.O. Howard
crossed the nation campaigning for funds to help build this living memorial to
Abraham Lincoln. As a proud legacy took root, students arrived at our gates with
little more than the clothes on their backs and a will to succeed. Those individuals
labored on the farm, and cleaned campus buildings to reach their dreams. Their success became bound to their alma mater, and
they laid the foundation for giving at LMU.
The generous support of alumni and friends sustained the University through the hard times and propelled us to this exciting
period of rapid expansion we enjoy today. Today’s students learn in state-of-the-art laboratories and live in comfortable wellequipped housing because of caring and dedicated individuals like you.
LMU | PAGE 1
Our namesake, Abraham Lincoln, left a legacy that we strive to live up to today. On that fateful day when he pointed to a
map and told General Howard to “go there and do something for the loyal people of the Cumberland Gap,” I’m sure he never
envisioned this great University which bears his name. Yet, given his passion for learning, one would expect he would be
proud of what we have become, a University with a mission to provide academic opportunities to undeserved populations in
Appalachia and beyond. The future is bright indeed.
Why Philanthropy
Matters
From the Chairman of the Board
O. V. “Pete” DeBusk, ‘65
L
incoln Memorial University’s mission has been unchanged since 1897: to
serve the underserved and to provide educational opportunities to the
Appalachian region. I’m proud to be associated—as a graduate and as the
chairman of the board of trustees—with this school that has accomplished so
much. In recent years, our enrollment has increased over 60 percent. In addition
to Tennessee’s newest medical school and law school, LMU will soon be home
to a much needed College of Veterinary Medicine. Our physical campus has
transformed with the addition of new class room buildings and residence halls, as
well as through remodeling and reimagining our older facilities.
“Every dollar you give
to Lincoln Memorial
University strengthens
the future of an
individual life.”
At the heart of all of this growth and forward momentum, our mission is still about individual students. Despite the new
buildings and the increase in enrollment, a majority of our students still come to LMU from humble backgrounds. Many
require financial assistance in order to pay for their education. And, unfortunately, many students drop out before they can
graduate because they can’t afford to pay for school.
None of the progress we’ve made at LMU would be possible without donations from our graduates and faithful friends. Your
gifts help us provide students the opportunity to prepare themselves for the workforce they are about to enter. The beneficiaries
of your generosity are the men and women who leave here, ready to make an impact on their communities.

But we continue to need your help. We need your support to keep more students enrolled in their chosen programs, from
English and history, math and science, to medicine and law. Every dollar you give to Lincoln Memorial University strengthens
the future of an individual life. Won’t you please contact us today to see how you can help one of our students?

LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM)
welcomed its largest class to date, the Class of 2016.
The larger class size is a result of LMU-DCOM receiving
approval from the American Osteopathic Association
(AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation
(COCA) to increase its incoming class size from 150
students to 225 students. One hundred and three students
- or 44% of the Class of 2016 - hail from the immediate
tri-state region of Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. The
remaining 56% of the class members come from all over
the United States. The class is 61% male and 39% female,
and the average age is 25.

The national publication U.S. News & World Report released its
annual college rankings, and LMU was placed on the 2013 Up-andComers list. The web exclusive category was compiled as a result
of college administrators being asked to nominate institutions that
they thought had recently made the most promising and innovative
changes in areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus or
facilities. LMU also made significant gains in the overall ranking
as it moved from a Tier 2 listing in the Regional University South
category to a Tier 1 spot at No. 80 in the 2013 listing.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam’s visit to campus was a highlight
of the year’s Homecoming activities. Haslam was the keynote
speaker for the dedication of the new Math and Science Building that
had opened with the beginning of the school year in August. “In
Tennessee 22% of us over the age of 25 have a degree. Nationally it
is 30% and it really needs to be about 50%,” Governor Haslam said.
“You can do the math and figure out we’re going to need all the
help we can get to produce those graduates we need. As Governor
quite frankly, I’m thrilled that this new building is dedicated to an
area where we have such a great need and where the population is
saying help us produce more.” LMU President B. James Dawson and
the LMU Board of Trustees awarded Governor Haslam an Honorary
Doctorate of Public Service during the ceremony.

A new initiative aimed at improving ACT scores of high
school students in the University’s immediate service area
was launched. Using the results of LMU alumnus and trustee
Charles Holland’s multivariable testing process on ACT
testing, LMU developed an online prep course and workbook
that were made available to students within a 100-mile radius
of the University. Holland has tested his program with two
groups of East Tennessee students. The first test included
students from several area high schools and lasted 12
sessions. The average composite score improvement was 3.7
points. The second test was with a group of students from a
single Knoxville-area high school and involved four sessions.
The average composite score improvement was 1.75 points.

The Walter T. and Julia Pulliam Historic Newspaper Collection was
dedicated, and a special exhibit featuring some of the most prized
pieces of the collection was unveiled in the Carnegie Vincent Library.
Additionally, the archives room was named in honor of the Pulliams.
Mr. Pulliam donated his extensive historical newspaper collection,
which includes over 700 newspapers dating back to the 1600s, to
LMU. The Pulliam collection joined the Bert Vincent Papers, including
correspondence and other memorabilia from the career of the beloved
local writer and long-time Knoxville News Sentinel columnist, in
the LMU archives and gives the University a unique snapshot of the
history of journalism in the area. The extraordinary collection is
highlighted by the largest newspaper ever published - George Roberts’
Constellation. Published in New York in 1859, the eight pages are three
feet by four feet. The paper had a circulation of 28,000 and was 50 cents.

LMU and Chattanooga State Community College (ChSCC)
announced a collaboration that, pending approval by the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission
on Colleges (COC), will bring more higher education options
to individuals living in Chattanooga and surrounding counties.
Through the collaboration, LMU will offer graduate-level teacher
education tailored for professional educators. The agreement calls
for ChSCC to provide classroom space. Additionally, LMU will
provide an academic scholarship to qualified full-time faculty or
staff at Chattanooga State who enroll in the LMU programs. LMU’s
Carter and Moyers School of Education intends to offer two of its
most successful and popular programs, the Master of Education
(MEd) and Educational Specialist (EdS) degree programs, at night
and on weekends.

the purchase and installation of an ADA
compliant aquatic lift for the Mary S.
Annan Natatorium. The equipment will
allow accessibility to the pool for youth
and adults who have difficulty entering
and exiting the pool by way of steps, and
it opens up a world of possibilities for
adaptive programming and participation in
the Special Olympics and other programs.

The class of 1962 increased their giving
percentage from 2011-2012 to 2012-2013
by 18.6%. One great way to do this is by
establishing a class fundraising project. The class
of 1962 chose reconstruction of the flagpole on
the campus quad as their project. New lighting
to allow the flag to be more properly displayed, as
well as seating and landscaping near the flagpole
will modernize the look and add to the beauty of
the campus quad.

LMU and JFWA Host
World School 2012
For the second time since World School was
established, the international forum was held in
the United States. Nearly 100 delegates from 21
countries around the globe visited LMU for the
12-day educational and cultural event hosted jointly
by LMU and the J. Frank White Academy. The
ceremony featured administrators – including
President B. James Dawson, JFWA Principal Jarryd
Boster and Trustee and President Emeritus Gary
Burchett – offering welcome messages from the
LMU academic community. Knoxville Habitat for
Humanity Director of Partnerships Phil Watson gave
the keynote address. His presentation was fitting as
the education theme for the forum was Environment:
Housing and Volunteerism.

Lincoln Memorial University kicked off the
holiday season and ended the calendar year
in style with a full day of annual activities in
December 2012. The Women of Service Christmas
Festival started the day on the campus quad.
A myriad of holiday goods were sold by this
organization established to benefit LMU students.
The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra
performed two concerts in the Sam and Sue
Mars Performing Arts Center of Duke Hall that
were free and open to the public. The concerts
were sponsored by LMU, the City of Harrogate,
the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce,
the Tennessee Arts Commission and K-N-K Metal
Sales, Inc. The tree lighting ceremony was held
between the two performances and featured
music, storytelling and a visit from Santa Claus.
Mission of Hope Director Emmette Thompson

Game
CBS Sports Network‘s Division II Game of the Week on January 12, 2013, was the South Atlantic
Conference match-up between Lincoln Memorial University and Anderson University, and CBS
affiliate WVLT-TV in Knoxville preempted regularly scheduled programming that day to carry the
broadcast. This marked the first time the Railsplitters had played on national television, and LMU’s
efforts to pack the house were successful. T-shirts were given to the first 1,500 fans through the
door, 2,500 rally towels were handed out, and one lucky fan was chosen to shoot a half-court shot
for the chance to win $10,000.

Knoxville, Tenness
ee
Class of 1978
My parents were poor and didn’t have the money
to send me to a large school. I had my heart set on
going to UT, but they encouraged me to stay home,
go to LMU and commute. The youngest of 12
children, I did as they advised. I commuted, got a
job and paid my way through school.
LMU prepared me by giving me the education and
confidence I needed to go out into the workforce
and make a living. One of my professors, Mr.
Roy Floyd, probably gave me the best advice I can remember. I was an assistant manager at Long John Silvers in
Middlesboro, Ky., and Mr. Floyd would come in every Friday to have lunch. He told me one day, “In life, it’s not
always what you know that will bring you success, but what will bring you success is how you present yourself and
come across to others. He said it was best to listen and learn from others, then talk.”
It is important to me to help out some needy and deserving student that wants to succeed in life. I set up a
scholarship in honor of my brother Conrad for all he has done for LMU; for all of the lives he has touched and for
all the help he has given to students. I have had so many people tell me how much they liked him and that without
him, they probably would not have chosen LMU.
To those of you who are not giving back, I ask, ‘What’s your hold-up on supporting your alma mater? If you made
this your choice of schools, why not give back a little as respect to what you earned while attending LMU. Any
amount is taken and appreciated!’

Thank You For Your Support
From the Vice President for
University Advancement
Cynthia L. Whitt, MEd
“The most important
prayer in the world is
just two words long:
“Thank you!”
Thank You!
Meister Eckhart
Since childhood, we’ve all been trained to say “thank you.” Thanking someone who gives a gift or performs any act
of kindness feels perfunctory and sometimes insufficient.
But it’s often difficult for young students to describe the difference your gifts make in their lives. The majority of
our students receive some form of financial aid, many in the form of endowed or annual scholarships established
by donors like you. These scholarships eliminate obstacles that stand between our students and their graduation.
Without these scholarships, many of our students would never be able to afford a college education.
When I speak to LMU students and alumni, I’m so pleased to see and feel their true gratitude. They talk about their
LMU experience with a thankfulness that goes beyond words. None of that would be possible without incredibly
generous donors like you.
LMU | PAGE 39
At LMU, every gift supports the mission of this university. Every donation, regardless of the amount, contributes
toward the education of our students. For such gifts, a mere “thank you” doesn’t seem sufficient. Yet, it’s often the
only way that we can express our deep gratitude. So, on behalf of our students and everyone at Lincoln Memorial
University, I say, “Thank you.”

“I’ve always
felt like
we should
give back
when
we can.
That’s why
I’ve always
done it.”
Glenda Houston
Knoxville, Tennessee
Class of 1960
I came from Eton, Ga., in Murray County, near Dalton. I first learned about
LMU when I was two years old. My mother came to LMU to finish her
degree, so our family came to live in Harrogate until she graduated in 1941.
She had previously attended from 1932-35.
Life on campus was very different in the 1950s. My fondest memories
are of the friends I made, and I still keep in touch with a lot of them.
Most students lived on campus, and everyone worked. My job was in the
Alumni Office with Dr. Martin Peters.
I’ve always felt like alumni should give back when they can. My husband
Paul did not graduate from LMU, but he feels the same way. I have paid
alumni dues every year since I graduated. I learned that from my mother
who paid her alumni dues, too.
Anyone who graduates from Lincoln Memorial University should give
back, even if it is only $1 per year.
