President for University Advancement, Sarah Burnett, and Joan Uhl Pierce.
Dr. Mary Anne Modrcin has done it again! The Caylor School of Nursing recently received notification from the Department of Health and Human Services that its FY 2010 Advanced Education Nursing
Program application had been approved for funding. Dr. Modrcin submitted the application in response to a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announcement of a competitive grant opportunity under the Health Profession’s Program. This award will support the FNP program and will provide an additional three years to the first FNP grant that Nursing was awarded in 2007. An additional three years is not automatic. Dr. Modrcin had to apply for a competing continuation award documenting the previous good outcomes (and continuing need) from the previous grant award. The project is titled, “Enhancement of an FNP Serving Rural Appalachia.”
Dr. Modrcin would especially like to thank all the Nursing faculty and staff for their continued good work and support of all these good initiatives. Without all of their hard work, these initiatives would not be possible.
Congratulations to Dr. Modrcin and the Caylor School of Nursing!

The LMU School of Business met the requirements of the Baccalaureate/
Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners to be a Candidate for
Accreditation on June 27, 2010 with the Association of Collegiate Business
Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The department hopes to be ready for a site visit in January of 2011.
Mr. John Moore , Assistant Director of Institutional Research, and Dr. Ann Callahan , Assistant Professor of Social Work, attended the second pilot group meeting of the Global Perspectives Inventory (GPI) ( www.gpi.central.edu
) which was sponsored by the Appalachian College Association. LMU was one of 11 ACA member campuses to complete the GPI in 2010.
Larry Braskamp, developer of the GPI, suggested that a global perspective is the product of a multidimensional, developmental process that allows us to “become increasingly capable of understanding and acting in ways that are interculturally aware and appropriate.” Thus, a global perspective can strengthen our ability to cope with “complex life tasks.”
Braskamp suggested that the promotion of a global perspective is a shared responsibility of University administration, faculty, staff, students, and alumni. It is the responsibility of us all to create opportunities to personally engage with people different from ourselves as well as to constructively process the experience to learn from it.
LMU has worked to promote a global culture on campus by infusing courses with readings, classroom exercises, and service learning opportunities to expose students to cultural difference. Additional ways include the introduction of multicultural programming, student/faculty recruitment, and study abroad/ away opportunities, and yet, more can be done.
In the months ahead, Moore and Callahan will be developing ways to further support the emerging global perspective at LMU. They request suggestions from the University community on new directions in this area. This concerted effort is becoming more pressing as the University continues to grow and hopefully emerge as a microcosm of our global society.

The Colby Foundation awarded LMU the Colby Cassani Endowed Lectureship Series last fall. To fulfill this grant, LMU will offer a three part lecture series on October 21, 2010 which will involve the entire LMU community and be open to the public.
The Colby Foundation was established by Dr. John Cassani, D.O. and his wife Starla in the late 1990’s after the accidental death of their young son, Colby. Colby’s organs were donated to people in need of transplants. Since then, the Cassani’s have made it their mission to educate the medical community and raise the awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation.
October 21 will be dedicated to organ and tissue donation awareness. The morning will begin with
Fall 2010 Convocation featuring Starla Cassani who will tell Colby’s story. The afternoon session will include a representative from the TN Organ Procurement Organization and others who are involved in the education of medical personnel and other professionals who may deal with ethical, moral, and legal ramifications of organ donations.
This day will be a celebration of life for many individuals and families who have been touched by the selfless and generous act of giving life to another person.
The committee members are Ann Callahan, Karen Carter, Neal Cross, Vina Diderrich-Faulkner,
Joshua Dodson, Amy Drittler, Sandra McGuire, Mary Anne Modrcin, Ray Penn, Kate Reagan,
Martha Scheidler, Cindy Whitt, and Okie Wolfe .
The Colby Foundation is nationally recognized, and brings that prestige to LMU. It is an honor to host the Lectureship Series and provide another area of education to our students, faculty, staff and the larger community. The website is www.colbyfoundation.org
. I urge you to join their FaceBook page also.
Mark your calendars and join us on October 21!

Renewing Ideas and Engaging the Public – Presidential Sites and Libraries Conference V
Charlottesville, Virginia June 21-24
James Madison’s home: Montpelier
Hosts: Miller Center of Public Affairs and University of Virginia
Presented by: American Association for State and Local History, James Madison’s Montpelier , National
Park Service, National Archives and Records Administration, President Lincoln’s Cottage and White
House Historical Association.
Special lectures and workshops enhanced backroom tours of major presidential sites and archives in
Virginia. The conference host speaker was the director of the Miller Center, former governor of
Virginia Gerald L. Baliles. Presidential authors Joseph Ellis, Jon Meacham, Michael Beschloss, and
Annette Gordon-Reed delivered keynote addresses. Conference attendees were able to study operations at the Miller Center of Public Affairs, Jefferson’s Monticello, Madison’s Montpelier,
Washington’s Mount Vernon, and Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland.
I was able to make new professional connections with leading staff from the following sites: President
Lincoln Cottage; James Buchannan National Historical Park; the Martin Van Buren National Historical
Park; Harvard University’s Houghton Library-Lincoln collection; Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial
Park; White House Historical Association. I met and interviewed with a travel writer from Presidential
Places.com. A major discussion point throughout the conference was how to show how the various presidents reacted to each other during their careers. I was able to show how we have used this theme in a temporary exhibit Steve Wilson, Assistant Director and Curator for ALLM, built last year titled Abraham Lincoln and the Presidents: History & Heritage .
