Text: Reasoning Skills for Everyday Life, 2nd edition, by James F. Burkhart
Course Description: Designed to bring incoming students up to a minimum
competency in quantitative and qualitative skills. It includes such
topics as logic, arithmetic, graphing, statistics, problem solving
skills, and algebraic skills. The course is one of the means to satisfy
the Qualitative and Quantitative Reasoning requirement.
GRADING
Exams: Dates for exams are tentative, and may occur a week before or after the date
indicated below. At least a week’s notice will be given before the exam. There will be
no make-up exams. Any missed exam will result in a grade of zero. Excuses for illness
or family emergencies must be communicated to the instructor prior to the missed
exam. Graded exams will not be returned to students, but may be viewed in the Physics
Department (ENGR 206) from 8-5, M-F. Exams are closed book, but calculators will be
allowed. Exam 4 will be administered on the day of finals, and will only cover the
material from chapter 4.
Homework: On occasions randomly chosen by the instructor, homework will be
collected. Students who are physically present in the classroom at that time and who turn
in an original page (no photo-copies) at that time will be given 5 extra points on the next
exam. Homework turned in under any other circumstances will not qualify for this offer.
This will happen at least four times during the semester.
Attendance: Attendance will be rewarded (as above) but not monitored. It is each
student’s responsibility to cover any material due to missed lectures.
Grades: In summary, your grade will be an average of the four exams:

The grade ranges will be A: 90-100%, B: 80-89%, C: 70-70%, D: 60-69%, F: Below
60%. UCCS permits grades to be further specified using +’s and –‘s.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Reasonable accommodation: Students with a disability who require accommodations
should provide a letter of accommodation from Student Enrichment Services (MH 105,
x3354) within the first two weeks of the semester.
Calculators: A calculator will be required for this course. It is strongly recommended
that the student purchase a TI-30Xa from the bookstore. This will allow standardized
instruction on its use. Other types of calculators will require the student’s own
familiarization with the device. Calculators will be allowed during exams.
Cell phones, PDAs, talking, leaving the classroom: Please show respect to the other
members of the class by turning off the sound on cell phones and PDAs. Imperative
phone calls should be taken outside the classroom. Also, keep conversation to a
minimum during the lecture so that others can hear clearly. Please remain in the
classroom unless an emergency arises, since foot traffic in the class can be disruptive to
other students.
Questions, comments: It is my hope that you will feel comfortable asking questions in
class. Chances are that if you are unsure about some topic, there are others who have a
similar question. I would like the class to be as interactive as possible. If you have
relevant experience with a subject, please feel free to share comments with the class.
