This proposal will only be executed if SMOV activity STIS-11 (proposal 11386) STIS External Focus Check has a problem. Note that for STIS, the "best" focus and alignment are defined to be those which maximize the near-UV throughput of the 0.1X0.09 aperture. OBSERVING DESCRIPTION This is a contingency activity that will only be needed if activity STIS-11 (11386) finds a significant problem with the STIS focus or optical alignment. Visits will be prepared to repeat the coarse alignment sweeps that were done during SMOV2 (program 7075), and the fine alignment sweeps that were prepared for SMOV3a/b (programs 8512/8966), and to repeat the checks done by STIS-11. Only those visits that are judged necessary will be executed. Coarse sweeps will be done by taking images of a bright star using the F28X50OII filter; phase retrieval techniques will then be used to analyze the focus and alignment. Fine sweeps will use the G230LB grating together with the 0.1x0.09 aperture, and the optimal focus and alignment will be defined as the settings that maximize the throughput for this combination. After the optimal corrector positions have been determined and set, the observations done by STIS-11 will be repeated to confirm the success of these procedures. Visits 1 & 2 contain short 2 Proposal 11387 (STScI Edit Number: 8, Created: Monday, January 26, 2009 9:04:36 PM EST) - Overview mechanism functionals to test the corrector mechanism. The coarse alignment sweeps are given in visits 11 & 12, the fine alignment FOCUS sweep in visit 14 and fine alignment x-y tilt sweeps in visit 15. Visit 20 is intended to upload the final corrector updates and then repeat the focus check done as part of STIS-11. Exactly which visits will need to be executed, and the dependancies between visits will be decided based on how badly things are out of focus. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS If analysis of STIS-11 (11386) data determines that the STIS corrector mechanism needs to be adjusted, some subset of the visits in this proposal will need to be executed. This will probably need to wait until after the end of BEA, unless chance puts the required targets in BEA during the desired observing window. Several STIS SMOV activities and the release of STIS for ERO and GO science will probably have to be deferred or repeated if the focus needs adjustment. These SMOV activities include 11388, 11389, 11393, 11394, 11395, 11401, and 11403, and possibly also 11384.
