NOTICE TO CONTEMPORARY ARTS MAJORS CLARIFICATION OF WQB DEFINITION EFFECTIVE MAY 1, 2009 Please note: This applies only to the following Contemporary Arts (FPA) majors BA Visual Culture and Performance Studies Major, BFA Dance Major, BFA Film Major, BFA Music Major, BFA Theatre Major, BFA Visual Art Major This does not apply to minors, extended minors or double majors. Joint majors, second degree and concurrent degree students should check with their departmental advisors. Every SFU student admitted to a degree program after September 2006 is required to complete Writing, Quantitative and Breadth requirements. WQB requirements are listed on the other side of this page. The six majors offered in Contemporary Arts are easily identified by the middle number of the course: Area # 1 2 3, 9 4 5, 7 6 Major/Program BA Visual Culture and Performance Studies – FPA X1X BFA Dance Major – FPA X2X BFA Film Major – FPA X3X or X9X BFA Music Major – FPA X4X BFA Theatre Major – FPA X5X or X7X BFA Visual Art Major – FPA X6X To fulfill the Breadth Humanities requirement, any major can use an FPA course numbered outside their major and designated B-HUM. To fulfill the Undesignated Breadth requirement, any major can use an FPA course numbered outside their major, labeled B-HUM or not. For example, a Film student can use a visual art course FPA 167 B-HUM to meet B-HUM requirement and FPA 120 to meet Undesignated Breadth. An example of what would not meet the requirements is if a Theatre performance student used a Theatre production & design course, as it is the same major and would not be considered to be breadth. Student Responsibility: It is the responsibility of each student to be aware of the regulations as stated in the SFU Calendar. School and department staff are available for advice and guidance. However, the ultimate responsibility for completeness and correctness of course selection, for compliance with and completion of program and degree requirements (including WQB requirements if necessary), and for observance of regulations and deadlines rests with the student.
