05 - DEFINITIONS
Expansion Factor - The total number of loads delivered divided by the scaled number of loads.
This factor is a measure of the ratio of the scaled to the total loads delivered.
Frequency - A mathematical description of the ratio of non-sample to sample scale loads.
Frequency Card - Forms R5-2400-217 a-g, Sample Scaling Frequency Card, are "pull-tab"
cards numbered to correspond with the issued load receipt numbers. Each pull-tab display is
used to determine whether a load is a non-sample or a sample scale load.
Gross Weight - The weight of the truck and load of logs.
Multi-product Sale - A timber sale consisting of relatively small diameter trees which may be
manufactured into products such as chips or poles instead of saw logs. Saw logs may still be
produced from a portion of the sale.
Net Weight - The weight of the load of logs. (Gross Weight - Tare Weight = Net Weight).
Non-Sample Load - A load which is part of a sample population that has been randomly
selected to not be scaled.
Random Number Generator - A computer program used by the certified weighmaster to
randomly select loads for sample scaling.
Sample Load Scaling - A system of randomly selecting loads to be scaled for volume
determination.
Sample Scale Load - A load which is part of the sample population which has been randomly
selected for scaling.
Sample Scaling - The determination of Volume and Value by measuring loads selected using
statistical methods.
Sample Weight Scaling - A system of weighing each load and randomly selecting loads to be
scaled (this procedure results in fewer loads being scaled while still meeting the sampling error
tolerances, in addition, provides for load accountability).
Sample Weight Load - A load randomly selected for individual log scaling in addition to being
weighed.
Strata - A population of loads with similar characteristics. These can be physical such as
species or diameter; or they can be other characteristics, such as delivery location.
Tare Weight - The unloaded weight of the log truck.
Weighmaster - A state certified person responsible for certifying the weight of loads.
Weight Certificate - A paper record issued by the weighmaster certifying the correct weight of
the load.
