CHAPTER 20 – ESTIMATING TREE VOLUME AND WEIGHT
22.31a - Volume Distribution in Trees
22.31a-1 - Appling Defect to Multi-Product Trees
When utilizing the volume distribution chart to apply defect to multi-product trees (a tree with
both sawtimber and pulpwood) treat each product as a seperate section (stem). The following
example clarifies the proper procedure:
You are cruising a tree with 4 bolts of sawtimber and 3 bolts of topwood (7 bolts total height).
Sawtimber Defect: The first bolt of sawtimber is cull; so you look up the percent volume in the
first bolt of a 4 bolt tree, which is 33%. Enter "30" as the sawtimber defect percent. We round
defect to the nearest 10%.
Topwood Defect: The 6th bolt (or the middle bolt of the 3 topwood bolts) is also cull; so find the
percent volume for the 2nd bolt of a 3 bolt tree from the distribution chart. The chart shows 32%
so enter "30" as the topwood defect.
