Less experienced scalers should be checked more often with consideration given to their experience, capabilities, species, amount of defect, workload, etc. 63 Procedure A check sale shall contain a representative sample of a scaler's overall job of measurement. As a minimum, a check scale will consist of at least 100 logs and 30,000 board feet gross scale, or 200 logs representing a gross scale volume of at least 10,000 board feet. Calipers shall be used to take diameter measurements at all measurement points which cannot be accurately made with the scale stick, such as logs with crotched tops, or logs with broken and/or irregular ends. Scalping will not be required, except where bark thickness cannot be accurately estimated. 64 Standards The following check scaling standards shall be used to determine if satisfactory measurement standards are being maintained: Check Scale Percent of Defect on Logs Checked Up to 10 . . . . . . . . . Within 2 percent of check scale 10.1 to 15 . . . . . . . . Within 3 percent of check scale 15.1 to 20 . . . . . . . . Within .2 percent for each percent of defect Over 20 . . . . . . . . . Within 5 percent of check scale Examples: - Logs 8 percent defective must be within 2 percent of check scale - Logs 14 percent defective must be within 3 percent of check scale - Logs 16 percent defective multiply 16 x .2 - 3.2 percent of check scale - Logs 22 percent defective msut be within 5 percent of check scale R-1 SUPP 22 EFFECTIVE 08/29/91 The allowable limit of gross scale volume variance shall be + 2 percent unless otherwise justified.
