CHAPTER 20 MANAGEMENT OF OTHER RESOURCES IN WILDERNESS
2323.04 - Responsibilities
2323.04e - District Ranger. The District Ranger or Acting is responsible for approving:
1. Construction and installation of improvements or facilities necessary for the protection
of the wilderness resource in accordance with the forest plan direction.
2. Removal of nonconforming uses, developments, or facilities not under permit.
3. Construction and reconstruction of trails with treads less that 24 inches in width.
4. Routine maintenance of any existing water use or water-control structure as long as
this maintenance does not change the structure's location, size, or type, or increase the storage
capacity of a reservoir.
2324 - MANAGEMENT OF SUPPORT ACTIVITIES IN WILDERNESS
2324.04 - Responsibilities
2324.04d - District Ranger. The District Ranger or Acting is responsible for approving:
1. Construction of helispots for wildfire suppression and emergencies.
2326 - USE OF MOTORIZED EQUIPMENT OR MECHANICAL TRANSPORT IN
WILDERNESS
2326.04 - Responsibilities
2326.04d - District Ranger. The District Ranger or Acting approves the use of motorized
equipment or mechanical transport only under the conditions described in section 2326.1 item 1.
The Forest Supervisor approves item 3. The Regional forester maintains approval authority for
all other uses of motorized mechanical transport described in section 2326.1 item 2, 4, and 5,
including approval for use of tractors for fire suppression.
2326.1 - Conditions Under Which Use May Be Approved. Allow the use of motorized
equipment or mechanical transport only for:
1. Emergencies where the situation involves an inescapable urgency and temporary need
for speed beyond that available by primitive means. Categories include fire suppression, health
and safety, law enforcement involving serious crime or fugitive pursuit, removal of deceased
persons, and aircraft accident investigation.
