JOHN C. BEDELL Forest Supervisor SMALL PURCHASES HANDBOOK 42- Distinctive Items. 48. Saddle and pack Stock. The Range and Wildlife Staff Officer is designated the coordinator for the pack and saddle stock on the Carson National Forest. The duties of the coordinator are: (1) ensure the requirements of the Forest are met; (2) monitor the condition and quality of saddle and pack stock; and (3) coordiate inter- and intraforest transfers, purchases, sales and agreements for using personal horses for official duties. Requests for replacement stock or additional stock will be handled in the following manner: The District will contact the Horse Coordinator and advise him/her of their of their needs and with the proposal to obtain the replacement or additional stock; for example, purchase of Government horse, availability of transferring a horse from another District, or contracting for a personal horse. District personnel will have the prerogative of locating an animal to purchase or may request a more knowledgeable individual to locate one for them, after which they will, if possible, try the animal out to verify that it meets their needs. All acquistions must be approved by the coordinator. Geldings, jacks and jennys will be the only animals purchased for Government work. Mares will be considered for contract on a case-by-case basis.
