SPECIES FACT SHEET
Common Name: One-spot Rhyacophilan Caddisfly
Scientific Name: Rhyacophila unipunctata
Phylum: Mandibulata
Class: Insecta
Order: Trichoptera
Family: Rhyacophilidae
Technical Description: See Schmid (1970). Adult males required for
identification. Advice of Trichoptera expert suggested. Larval-adult associations
are unavailable (Wisseman pers. comm.). Closely related to R. unimaculata from
Montana and British Columbia (Denning 1941).
Life History: Adults have been collected in June, once at each of two
locations. Adult emergence is likely to be spread over several months,
depending on elevation, water temperatures, and particular spring weather
patterns (Wisseman pers. comm.). No other life history information is available
for this species.
Range, Distribution, and Abundance: Known only from two sites in the
Oregon Cascades, which are separated by about 100 miles; vicinity of Hemlock
Butte, Lane Co. and east side of Barlow Pass (Mt. Hood), Hood River Co. The
original collections were made in 1965. Surveys conducted in recent years at
both of these original sites have failed to re-collect this species; however this
species may be widely distributed at higher elevations in the Cascade
Mountains of Oregon and possibly north into Washington (Wisseman pers.
comm.).
Documented occurrences are known from the Mt. Hood and Willamette
National Forests.
Habitat Associations: Adults from the original collections were captured next
to small streams, from a minimum elevation of 3700 feet. Most Rhyacophila are
associated with cool, running water habitats of small to mid-size, forested,
montane streams (Wisseman pers. comm.).
Threats: No specific information available.
Conservation Considerations: None addressed.
Other pertinent information (includes references to Survey Protocols,
etc): Surveys should begin in May and continue through July. The most
efficient and economical survey methods would be sweep-netting of streamside
vegetation or ultraviolet light traps (Wisseman pers. comm.).
