2 Introduction
Towards building a list of macrofungi for the Colville National Forest (CNF), the Interagency
Special Status Species Program funded initial surveys for macrofungi in 2009 (Ahlenslager).
Through that project Andrew Parker and Dr. James Groth documented 292 taxa (Appendix 1).
In 2010 the ISSSP funded a project to survey at least 50 acres in each of four Research Natural
Areas (RNAs) on the CNF: Bunchgrass Meadows, Halliday Fen, Round Top Mountain, and
Salmo Mountain (Figures 1-3). The sizes, elevation ranges, and representative vegetation for
the RNAs are shown in Table 1. Through this project a list of 767 macrofungi for the Forest was
compiled from surveys in 2009 and 2010, lists from other surveyors, and journal articles
(Appendix 1).

Background
The first attempt to gather information on macrofungi in northeastern Washington occurred in
1994 for the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project (ICBEMP). Eighteen
fungi taxa "of special concern" (Fogel 1994, Weber 1994) were documented and are shown on
Appendix 3. Robert Fogel’s “Report on Fungi from the Columbia Basin Deposited in the
University of Michigan Herbarium" (1994) includes state and county location information, as
3 well as, habitat information for 60 Washington fungal species of concern. State and county
records are also listed for 27 common Columbia Basin fungi in Washington.
According to Dewey (2008), the University of Michigan Herbarium is the single largest source
of records for eastside macrofungi of concern in Washington. Queries of the University of
Michigan Herbarium type database (2011) revealed northeastern Washington location
information for 15 taxa (Appendix 3).
Weber (1994) considered Plectania milleri a “high” species of concern because it was described
from the region and is apparently limited to the Pacific Northwest and northern Rocky
Mountains. Dr. Jim Groth was successful in relocating this macrofungi on the Sherman Peak
Trail in 2010 at 6000 feet growing in moss. The voucher was sent to the ISSSP for deposit at the
University of Washington Herbarium.

Cabral.
In the 1995 "Report on Fungi" for ICBEMP, Michael Castellano recognized Pend Oreille County
as a geographic area of special concern and a center of endemism, especially in forests
containing Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine or grand fir. He suggested that this area receive special
emphasis as a mycological hot spot or mycological reserve status because of the high number of
type specimens from this area and high richness of other species. Castellano identified 12
mycorrhizal species of concern occurring in Pend Oreille County (Appendix 3).
Other lists of macrofungi for northeastern Washington include the 1974 to 1989 lists compiled
by Nicolin Gray, a member of the Spokane Mushroom Club (Gray 1999) (Appendix 4). Five of
her 1989 sightings of macrofungi were from the “burned-out area near the top of Sherman Pass,”
(1988 White Mountain Fire). Also at Sherman Pass, Gray cites two 1983 taxa from “melting
snowbanks in the mountains which is a rather specialized habitat.” Regarding Gray’s list of 43
taxa from Pend Oreille County, “Most of the rest of these came from the vicinity of Sullivan
Lake, especially Noisy Creek Campground, and also along the road between Metaline Falls
[Washington] and Nordman [Idaho].”
4 Over the last 20 years, Andrew Parker has tallied 660 taxa for Pend Oreille County. Most of his
sightings and collections were from the CNF. Those vouchered are shown on Appendix 2).
Methods
Macrofungi surveys of at least 50 acres were conducted in each of four Research Natural Areas
on the east side of the CNF. Dr. Jim Groth surveyed Bunchgrass Meadows and Round Top
Mountain (Groth 2010). Andrew Parker was responsible for surveys of Halliday Fen and Salmo
Mountain (Parker 2010a). Surveys followed the Region 6 “Macro-fungi Sporocarp Survey
Protocol” (VanNorman et al. 2008), which prescribes at least two survey visits at three-week
intervals in the spring and fall for a total of four visits to each RNA.
Results
Survey routes in each of the four RNAs are displayed on Figures 4-7. The surveyors, Dr. Jim
Groth and Andrew Parker, each identified their specimens. Lists of taxa and the dates of the
surveys conducted in 2010 for each RNA are shown on Appendix 5. Surveys and sighting data
are in the Forest Service Natural Resource Information System TES Plants database. The
number of taxa sighted for each of the surveys is displayed on Table 2, along with the number of
acres surveyed.

Observations from the surveyors regarding moisture and macrofungi conditions in 2010 were as
follows:
Dr. Jim Groth, Bunchgrass Meadows
June 30th: Moisture levels good, mostly due to snowmelt. Snow patches still found in about
10% of shaded areas. Forest ground vegetation shows signs that snow only recently receded
from most areas. Large fleshy mushrooms scarce, probably because of cold soils. Campground
5 was the exception. Much water standing and flowing in ditches. Mosquitoes numerous in
wooded areas.
July 21st: Much less water in ditches. Warm but dry. Soil moisture good, with moderate
numbers of ground mushrooms. Mosquitoes still thick. It appears moisture is limiting for
prolific mushroom growth.
October 14th: Warm and dry, with westerly breeze. Fens and meadow streams with plenty of
water because of earlier rains. Mushrooms flushing in all upland areas. Hard frost in the
morning, with all mushrooms frozen. Upon thawing, most were still in good shape.
Dr. Jim Groth, Round Top Mountain
July 12th: Soil dry. Apparently little rainfall recently. Few large ground mushrooms. Shrubs so
thick that seeing ground mushrooms off trail is difficult.
August 7th: Still quite dry. Most larger fungi on wood.
September 30th: Warm and dry. Soils fairly dry and not conducive to mushroom flushes. Hard
freezes previously had killed off meadow vegetation for the season.
Andrew Parker, Halliday Fen and Salmo Mountain
May 25th, June 6th and 24th, July 8th: Both surveys benefited from the unusually cool and wet
early June weather, the Halliday Fen more so than Salmo Mountain. Salmo Mountain presented
a bit of difficulty in that, though its elevation ranged down to just under 4200', the only access
was at around 5900'. This meant that the access road was blocked by snow at the most optimal
time to begin the survey, and it had dried out somewhat by the time I was able to get to it. This
scenario would work in reverse for any fall survey, shortening the access time while the lower
elevations maintained their productive period. Also worth mentioning, Salmo Mountain's steep
terrain and thick forest cover prevent efficient surveying very far off of its single trail.
October 4th, 6th, 11th, 12th: The weather was conducive to a good showing of fungi this fall as the
rains began at the beginning of September which is on the early side of average. The results
were good with 104 and 97 taxa identified for the Halliday Fen and Salmo Mt. units respectively.
It was impractical to make a second visit to the sites due to the subfreezing temperatures and
snowfall that occurred in the last half of October that shut down the fruiting and damaged what
was already up. In lieu of the second visit, I will submit my list of macro-fungi taxa for Pend
Oreille County that I have compiled over my years of collecting here. I expect to submit that list
by the end of January 2011.
Sighting information and lists from other mycologists and journal articles were gathered and are
displayed on Appendix 2, along with taxa that Andrew Parker considers rare or uncommon in
Pend Oreille County. A total of 767 macrofungi taxa have been sighted or collected in the tricounty area of the CNF. Although the surveyors attempted to follow the survey protocol, it was
impractical to make a second visit in the fall of 2010 to the sites due to earlier than usual
6 subfreezing temperatures and snowfall that occurred in the last half of October that shut down
the fruiting and damaged what was already up.
In 2010 the Pacific Northwest Key Council sponsored a foray in Metaline Falls in Pend Oreille
County. Fungi seen and collected are included in Andrew Parker’s list of taxa for the county.
Parker collected Tyromyces kmetii during the foray. Dr. Jim Ginns, retired from the Agriculture
and Agri-Food Canada National Mycological Herbarium in Ottawa knows of only two other
collections in North America (Alberta and Louisiana) (2010b). The taxon is widespread, but
uncommon in Europe. Mycologists in Scandinavia are sequencing polypores, so Ginns sent a
piece to them for comparison with European collections.
Tyromyces kmetii was collected by Andrew Parker in 2010. Photo by Andrew Parker.
Plectania milleri was the only rare taxa found in 2010. Dr. James Groth provided specimen label
information with location and habitat data, which were submitted with the vouchers to the ISSSP
in November, 2010 for deposit in the University of Washington Herbarium.
Regarding the surveys in 2010 Andrew Parker stated, “There were no target species found. It's
difficult to determine which, if any, of the taxa on my survey list would qualify as rare, but there
are a few here I would characterize as at least uncommon. One taxa, Albatrellus syringae, is
likely rare from what I know though I have found it one other time just a few miles from this
collection. Some other taxa I feel are uncommon would include Hygrophorus subviolaceus,
Lepiota felina, Lepiota acutesquamosa, Cortinarius supurbus, and possibly Clavariadelphus
sachalinensis and Clavariadelphus caespitosus to name a few. Vouchers, where indicated, are
retained in my personal collection” (Appendix 2).
