Course Description: This course gives students practical information about legal issues that directly affect their lives.
Students will examine the need for laws in society, the roots of Canada’s legal system, the rights and freedoms that
people in Canada enjoy, and the basic elements of criminal law and dispute resolution. Through experiences such as
mock trials, debates, and case studies, students will apply inquiry and communication skills to develop and express
opinions on legal topics of interest to them.
Big Ideas (overall learning outcomes for the course):
● Law is a process, that builds over time
● The Law reflects the values of a society
● Canadians have rights and freedoms and we must learn to exercise them
Instructional Strategies: Westside teaching staff will use a variety of instructional strategies to help students develop
and improve skills in the following areas: character, citizenship, communication, critical thinking and problem solving,
collaboration and teamwork, and creativity and imagination.
Assessment and Evaluation: Formative assessments are used to improve student learning by providing varied opportunities to
demonstrate an understanding of course expectations in preparation for summative evaluations. Summative evaluations test
groups of key expectations. Failure to complete a summative evaluation may result in the expectations of the course not being
met and the credit not being granted. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on work missed during absence. Should
there be extenuating circumstances, parents must contact the teacher prior to the final deadline.
