Two-day Seminar on
Social Issues and Challenges
20th – 21st October, 2014, Department of Psychology, Mizoram University
Social problems, also called social issues, affect every society, great and small. Even in
relatively isolated, sparsely populated areas, a group will encounter social problems. The list of
social problems is huge and not identical from area to area. Some predominant social issues include
the growing divide between rich and poor, domestic violence, unemployment, pollution, urban
decay, racism and sexism, and many others.
To approach any social issue or challenge, it is imperative to understand the various spheres
that society and its members interact with. There are numerous social institutions that cause or are
affected by social issues: economic institutions, political institutions, religion, family etc. Hence, one
needs to account for social, economic, political, geographical, environmental and psychological
factors in dealing with social issues and challenges. Indeed, sharing of research information
pertaining to socio-economic issues such as sustainability, poverty, planning, environment and
society, migration, development etc.; socio-political issues such as regionalism, political parties,
ethnic identification etc.; gender and child issues such as violence against women, discrimination,
HIV/AIDS, third gender problem, juvenile delinquency, education, disabilities etc.; psycho-social
issues such as social cognition, identity, adjustment, wellbeing, depression, socialization, parenting,
aging and the like will go a long way in bringing about a much needed understanding to tackle the
issues and challenges facing our society.
