CENTRE WELLINGTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION PAD 401 COURSE OUTLINE Instructors: P. Bruce & J. Brubacher This course continues to focus on themes introduced in PAD 301, including the development of an appreciation for the out-of –doors through a variety of enjoyable activities that have the potential to further engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Through a unique curriculum combining classroom study, field expeditions and practicum, students will have the opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to contribute to the exciting and challenging outdoor recreation industry. Pre -requisites: PAD 301 and/or approval of instructors Specific Requirements: A positive attitude, passion, creativity, desire to solve problems, commitment, the desire to work with others, sense of humour, love for the out-of-doors, commitment to protecting the earth. Where this course leads: University, College or Apprenticeship programs in recreation, physical education, leisure and fitness leadership. Course Focuses: Group Dynamics Outdoor Education and Society Ecological Literacy Risk Management Expedition Facilitation Outdoor Skills Course Fee: $300 Evaluation: The Ministry of Education Expectations for this course curriculum, specify that daily participation for a sustained period of time is essential. Students, therefore, must participate regularly in order to demonstrate they have fully understood course content. For this reason, consistent attendance is important, field expeditions are MANDATORY and assignments must be completed according to the CWDHS submission policy. Besides the following categories, students are taught and evaluated on five learning skills: independence, team work, organization, work habits an initiative. Learning skills are indicated on the report card by: excellent, good, satisfactory or needs improvement. Assessment Categories: TERM WORK (70%) OVERALL VALUE Knowledge and Understanding -presentations, outdoor skills, planning Thinking and Inquiry -reflection assignments on particular events and minor assignments Communication -class presentations, skills teaching, discussions, written contemplation, group discourse Application -consistent daily participation demonstrating leadership -planning, execution and participation on major field expeditions such as ropes course, canoe trip, and winter camping. 14% SUMMATIVE EVALUATION (30%) -Facilitation Assignment –15% -Reflective Journal or Portfolio-15% 30% 7% 7% 42% 100% TOTAL Equipment Necessities: Sleeping bag (minimum -10`C rating at least) Hiking and winter boots Two sets of layer systems (active clothing) Rain gear, winter gear Daily Active wear (keep both indoor and outdoor clothing in your locker) Safety: Personal safety is the number one consideration when approaching the health benefits of the out-of-doors and expeditions. Instructors use a progressive method towards preparation and risk management. Drugs and alcohol are not accepted and students will be immediately removed from the course if found in contravention of school policy. As well, any student behaving in a manner which the instructors deem to endangering the safety of students, will be removed from the course immediately.
