Do you love to hit the trails on an
ATV or snowmobile? Do you like
the challenge of figuring out what is
wrong and then fixing small engines
or mechanical equipment?
There is a strong need for people who can
service this equipment and this class will
give you the skills to start your career! Small
Engines is a class full of hands-on learning that
will build skills to help you earn your pay! In this
course, students will take on class projects that
may include:
• Basic hand tool function and tool
fabrication project
• Disassemble, inspect, reassemble and run a 4-stroke engine
• Disassemble and run a 2-cycle engine
• Engine electrical projects including
– Ignition systems
– Starting systems and charging systems
• Snowmobiles, ATV’s, lawn tractors and snow blowers are only a few of the projects
This program focuses on hands-on skills
throughout the different grades. These
skills will be used during the course and are
transferable to a career path in small engines.

Small Engines
GRADE 9
GRADE 11
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
This program offers a concentrated look at 2
and 4-cycle engine principles and design, as
well as a detailed look at many other small
engine type equipment systems. There is a
significant hands-on component that will allow
individuals to develop practical skills to meet
the current needs of the small engine industry.
Grade 11 offers an in depth look at engine
function and design. This class takes on
some of the more major repair jobs including
cylinder boring and valve work.
There are many job opportunities in the small
engine industry and these are just a few:
GRADE 10
GRADE 12
In grade 10, we focus on workshop procedure
including troubleshooting, engine overhauls,
fuel systems and fuel management. Specialty
tools are introduced and used to do some of
the more skilled techniques.
During the grade 12 class, we will be looking at
skills that can be transferred to a work place
or in preparation for college. Engine electrical
systems and principles are examined.
Apprentice
The Small Engine Mechanic Apprentice
diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, or overhauls small
engines used to power lawn mowers, chain saws,
and related equipment.
Customer Service Specialist
Parts counter or over the phone service advice.
Working in customer service will require
knowledge of principles and processes for
providing customer and personal services. This
includes customer needs assessment, meeting
quality standards for services, and evaluation of
customer satisfaction.

Start a business and get contracts to fix fleet
equipment. Open your own shop! Small engine
mechanics do not require the same expensive
tools and diagnostic equipment as some of the
other trades do. What better way to make a
living than being your own boss and doing what
you love!
Technician
Work for Polaris or another major off road
vehicle company.
Golf course or rental equipment technician and
fork truck mechanic are also jobs available in
the small engines industry.
