Practicum  Learning  Agreement  

Project  Title :  Project  Phlame  and  Project  Revamp

Overview  -­‐   Bebashi  was  founded  in  1985  in  response  to  the  increasing  incidence  of  HIV/AIDS  in  the  

African  American  community  of  Philadelphia.  They  are  a  full-­‐service  HIV/AIDS  case  management  agency   with  a  special  interest  in  serving  low-­‐income  people  of  color  with  HIV  disease.  Their  mission  is  to  provide   culturally  sensitive  health  related  information,  direct  service,  and  technical  assistance  in  the  areas  of   sexual  health  and  prevention  of  sexually  transmitted  disease  to  the  urban  community.  Their  programs   are  designed  to  meet  the  needs  of  the  underserved  community  and  their  educational  efforts  focus  on   street  outreach  to  areas  of  the  community  most  in  need  of  prevention  information  and  direct  care   services  to  those  who  are  least  likely  to  receive  it.

Student’s  Responsibility  :   Program  Assistant  

General  Purpose:  To  assist  the  agency’s  Prevention  Department  in  a  variety  of  sexual  health  awareness   initiatives,  which  focus  on  increasing  community  education  and  participation  in  testing  services

 

National  HIV  Testing  Day  (Event)

● Creating  informational  materials  around  HIV/AIDS  and  prevention  and  screening   (Deliverable)

● Community  and  social  media  outreach  leading  up  to  the  event  in  an  effort  to  increase   attendance  at  event  and  number  of  participants  receiving  HIV  tests

● Identifying  venue  for  event  and  securing  entertainment

● Securing  incentives  to  offer  participants  who  complete  the  HIV  screening  

● Communicate  with  Media  outlets  in  an  effort  to  promote  event

Project  PHLAME  -­‐  

Providing  services  to  the  MSM  community,  eliminating  boundaries  that  hinder  life  progression,   providing  resources  and  referrals,  a  safe  environment  for  social  development,  linkage  to  in-­‐house  case   management  and  medical  care,  HIV/AIDS/STI  education  and  testing.  

● Assisting  with  building  of  curriculum  

● Promoting  the  support  group  (via  community  and  social  media  outreach)

● Assisting  with  event  planning

● Researching  information  about  the  MSM  population  in  the  Philadelphia  area

● Developing  marketing  materials  for  the  program   (Deliverable)

● Promoting  free  service  to  the  public  primarily  youth  -­‐  in  an  effort  to  increase  participation  

Prevention  Education  

● Attending  various  sites  to  accompany  supervisor  during  presentations  to  the  public

● Assisting  with  data  entry,  assembly  of  paperwork  and  creation/distribution  of  care  packages

● Attending  various  community  health  fair  events  to  educate  the  public  about  sexual  health  issues

 

Skills

● A  thorough  knowledge  and  understanding  of  sexual  health  topics

○ Creating  outlines  and  conducting  mock  presentations  for  the  following  sexual  health   topics:    HIV/AIDS  101,  Bacterial  STDs  ,    Viral  STDs  and  Breast  Health

● Sensitivity  to  diversity  (i.e.  gender  differences,  socioeconomic  status,  substance  abuse  &  mental   health  issues)

● Strong  oral  &  written  communication  skills  (developing  press  releases)

● Program  planning  &  organizing  for  National  HIV  Testing  Day  event
