Epic Poems …
We’ve had a few moments of fun
The last bits were done on the run
The ID and acq
The fine guide and track
Were battles not easily won.
The NIRISS has all kind of apps
For nerdy astronomer chaps
We’ll find the first light
Out there in the night
And planets right in the ring gaps.

NIRISS Observing Modes
Wide-Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS)
Optimized for Lyα emitters
Wavelength range: 1 – 2.5 μm
Spectral resolving power: 150
Line flux sensitivity requirement (S/N=10, 10 ks): 6.25x10-21 W m-2 at 1.4 μm with F140M filter.
Aperture Masking Interferometry (AMI, high-contrast imaging)
Three medium-band (5-8%) filters
Wavelength range: 3.8 – 4.8 μm
Contrast: 10-4 between 70 and 500 mas on 5th magnitude star at 4.8 um
Single-Object Slitless Spectroscopy (SOSS)
Optimized for relatively bright stars (e.g., exoplanet transiting systems).
Wavelength range: 0.6 – 2.5 μm
Spectral resolving power: 700 at 1.25 μm
Brightness limit: J=7 (J=5; goal)
Imaging (viewed as a parallel observing mode only)
7 NIRCam filters: F090W, F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, F444W

Summary
FGS NIRISS:
Signed
Sealed
Delivered
It’s Ours.
There’s much more excitement ahead
Detectors to put in instead
The wheel motors as well
Maybe more – who can tell?
A path we’re still waiting to tread.
