Course Description:

This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, collage, and/or multimedia art. Students will use the creative process to create art works that reflect a wide range of subjects and will evaluate works using the critical analysis process. Students will also explore works of art within a personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural context.

Big Ideas, and Unit Culminating Tasks

Units of Instruction:

1. Sketchbook drawing : Reviewing the elements and principles using a ‘keyhole’ perspective. Drawing in sketchbook understanding of each element & principle

2. Journals: Exploring the importance of process and documentation. Creating journal entries outlining artistic process

3. Found & Environmental Art: Exploring medium choices and experimentation with non-traditional materials. Using natural materials to create a sculpture inspired by researched environmental artists.

4. Art of Nature: Studying the art of nature through shells, sticks, rocks…etc Still life drawing studies and watercolour painting in postcard format

5. Architectural Study : Exploring global architectural design through etching and clay relief studies

6. Fundamental Artists: Exploring various major art movements. Research and produce artwork in the specific style or purpose reflective of chosen artist.

Course Culminating Task/Exams and Description

Culminating 25%: Message of Art: Expression of personal social commentary reflected in modern art traditions through medium and materials of choice.

Exam 5%: Exam will contain key concepts explored throughout the semester. This includes historical and contemporary art references, elements & principles of design and an ability to apply a creative analysis to a piece of artwork.
